  • Growlife: What Are They Smoking? [View article]
This might not be the next "big" thing, but it's a wave I've been watching for some time. Once the states of Colorado and Washington start to report on the tax revenue being collected from the LEGAL sale of regulated marijuana, Govenors and State Houses across the US are going to want a piece of that pie. States are already becoming increasingly complacent with enforcing marijuana laws just based on cost to the court/jail/prison system. Why not have the state profit from it? It's not like the war on drugs has worked.

  • GM To Attack Tesla With An Electric Car [View article]
This is a great point. The electrical grid wouldn't be able to support the masses having electric vehicles. While the electricity can be produced, distributing it leads to a problem.

One other thing about electric cars, run one with the heat on and it cuts the range almost in half. Not good for the northern latitudes

  • EMC Stores Big Data And Big Value [View article]
I'm really not sure what to think anymore about storage. It seems storage is becoming a commodity and prices are converging along with the feature sets of the major players. In some cases, storage is going "back" to the server instead of being centrally located. This is due in large part to the size of available disks and that backplane scsi speed always trumps any type of fiber speed. Also the "cloud" options are limited. It takes quite a bit of skill and money to play in that arena. While flash is the new buzzword, everyone will bring it to market within the same 12 month period. Myabe EMC will make it as a holding company. Time will tell.

  • FOMC Minutes: Several on the committee saw tapering as likely and warranted soon, but many want to see further improvement in the labor market first. Several want to see faster economic growth in addition to improvement in employment. [View news story]
Glass-Stegall. So few know what that is and how important it "was"...

  • Too Cheap To Ignore - It's Time To Buy EMC [View article]
I think you're right about the commoditization of storage. Look for storage to become cheaper and margins smaller.

  • Too Cheap To Ignore - It's Time To Buy EMC [View article]
EMC is the storage your Dad bought when he was in IT. It's old. The models of "future data growth" have been around for over a decade. Companies like Left Hand (HP owned), 3 Par (HP owned), Xiotech, Compellent, etc, jumped into the market at that time. Their products are coming to maturity just as corporate America has grown tired of the "Evil Machine Corporation". If Microsoft cuts into VMware's sales, which they are in my shop, I'd stay away from EMC.

Not so sure about this one. Up and coming storage companies are starting to bring products to market the rival EMC. Also I believe EMC still has VMware under it's product umbrella which has been getting pressure from Microsoft's HyperVisor technology. With the way Microsoft is licensing the product, it will surely cut in the EMC's sacred cash cow.
