The 500 is a fad, all the cute people dancing with J-Lo already bought one. Nothing to see here.

  • Is The Enerplus Dividend Sustainable?  [View article]
Been so focused on the comments I had to go re-read the original article. The author's forecast was indeed accurate, in that a dividend cut was pending. Good call Jeffery. With the cut they free up ~$48M a quarter in cash flow, which should help with the debt or capital spending to generate more oils and liquids production. What appears to be killing them is that oil keeps going down as well. I don't think we'll see any price appreciation until oil price trend reverses, which will happen, just a question of when.

Asset sales take a little more time and they obviously thought they needed to take immediate action to lower cash drain. Purchasing today at the new divy level gets you an 8% yield while lowering your cost basis. If earlier comments are on target, price should start to rise.

  • Facebook IPO: What It Is And What It Isn't  [View article]
Good article John. I played it on IPO day when I saw the underwriters put up a firewall at $38 with 9 million shares bid. I grabbed a few hundred and then let them go above $41. I'll be watching and looking to reenter in the mid $20s if they can deliver some growth in coming quarters..

The IPO valuation was just too high, and as you say not comparable to peers LNKD and GOOG.

  • Why New York Community Bancorp Is My Favorite Financial  [View article]
I think what will drive earnings growth is the acquisition of assets of several failed bank from FDIC at very favorable prices over the last couple of years. Amvest as mentioned, and at least one bank in Florida and some other assets. They were an FDIC favored child when bank failures were running rampant. The dividend is structured to reward inside owners as much as retail holders. I originally got in mid $8 range during the darkest days of 2009. Sold when it got to 18 and repurchased back in the $11 range last fall.

To me the biggest problem is that the dividend has not increased, and for a long term hold based on dividend income you want to see the dividend growing over time. Still 7% is not bad compared to what my bank is offering for deposits.

If you want a steady bank with a growing dividend take a look at Tompkins Trust in Ithaca, NY. TMP is the symbol. It won't set your hair on fire, but a long term holding it surely is.

Well if it was a good buy at 24, 22, 21, 19, and 16, it is literally screaming to be added here below 15. Note that the management commentary listed cutting the dividend as the the third of three options to maintain strong financial position.

I am long 1500 shares at an average cost of 21.39 and am feeling the pain. But seriously sell it at this point for a near 10k loss? I am about ready to add some more. Even if they cut the dividend, it will be a short term reduction and they will grow it again later on. A twenty five percent dividend cut will still yield 10% on shares purchased today with the potential for serious capital gain in the neighborhood of 50% if the stock were to return to $22.50 in the next year or so.

The smart money as has been mentioned would have been to sell around 24-25 and be loading up right now.

I believe if held in an IRA you would not run into any tax consequences unless the income was over $1000 per year. I am not a tax advisor and you should validate this information for yourself.
