  • This Fund May Be Your Best Call For Preferred Shares [View article]
It's been my experience..., the ONLY time to buy closed end funds is during a major market sell off. This is especially true with preferred funds. See 10 year chart on FFC. I would be cautious purchasing FFC of any closed end fun fat today's prices.

  • "Just because the Fed wants us to take more risk doesn't mean we should," says CEO Michael Hough on the Hatteras (HTS +1.3%) earnings call. Management is clearly frustrated with the Fed's $40B/month in MBS purchases - "the gorilla in the room," "an uneconomic buyer," "program without end." The company is prepared to take "any and all actions," but won't commit to altering leverage, selling MBS, or undertaking buybacks. (earnings, last night) [View news story]

  • Declining Propane Demand Will Eventually Threaten AmeriGas' Dividend [View article]
I agree with ValueForGood! APU is also a innovative company. They have AmerGas exchange racks in every large and small shopping center in our country. This was unheard of just 10 years ago. Can't imagine how many AmerGas propane tanks were purchased two days ago for our annual 4th of July celebration barbecues. Also, for the many rural communities in our country which have no gas pipeline access propane is a way of life for heating and cooking. BAX. PS: I live in BCS, Mexico..., where all cooking is done by propane stoves. Purchasing an electric range is unheard of in the Baja because of power outages and reliability issues.

  • Fire Up Your Portfolio With Transportadora De Gas Del Sur's 11.8% High Yield Bonds [View article]
I agree with the above authors. Christina Fernandez is a loose cannon. Investing in Argentina is courting financial suicide. Randy's really sticking his neck out on this one.... BAX. PS: My old boss at Dean Witter & Co(Ed Witter) once told me.., "there's a BIG difference between investing in stocks and bonds(?)...., when you buy bonds, you purchase them with the understanding( guarantee) that you're going to get your investment returned...." I don't think Christina is troubled about this....

  • Morgan Stanley (MS) changes its compensation rules, making it easier to clawback or cancel bonuses for "circumstances ranging from substantial losses to ethical lapses and include failure to appropriately supervise or manage an employee." The new rules will apply to all top execs and may become the model for other large banks.  [View news story]

  • Alaska Communications Surprising Sale Of Wireless Business Creates Two Important Catalysts [View article]
Nick: I too agree with your thesis..., potential investors should should pay close attention, I too see a dividend in the near future. As the late Jesse Livermore said many years ago.."it's not the buying or selling that's important, it's the waiting..."

  • 2 Tactical Municipal Bond Strategies For Non-Qualified Retirement Portfolios [View article]
CEF's can be very, very good investments. I've used then as building blocks in my clients portfolio's for years. Like most stocks and bonds.., it's best to purchase them after a market event.., i.e, Meredith Whitney, 2008-2009, etc. CEF's typically have poor liquidity and are very volatile. This can make for extraordinary "buying" opportunities. I personally own several Cal Muni CEF's that have appreciated more than 50% since 2008 plus they are providing me with a handsome state/fed tax free income.

  • Drought Hits American Pickup Trucks [View article]
Farmers will continue to add crop production in MEXICO and elsewhere. Take the drive from Ensenada,BCN south thru the Baja. What was once a dessert 10 years ago( like California was 80 years ago) is now bustling with agricultural activity. View the community of Vizcano 30 miles east of Guerrero Negro. Vizcano did not exist 10 years ago and it now has more Ford 150 pickups than Jack rabbits plus three Pemex gas stations to keep them running. Yes! Pickup are selling.., go buy a big hat(sombrero) and see for yourself. BAX. PS: Buy some PACCAR too.., you've never witnessed BIG trucks until you've made this drive,

CV: Hola! amigo: as usual..., excellent article where you abundantly address "the risks". I'm going go take a close look at APEOF, The company fits my risk parameters. I also enjoyed your recent article on Whiting. I value the contributions that Michael Falloon, ValueDigger, and you make(others too) to us SD readers. Many of us have profited handsomely from your research. Saludos, BAX

  • Petrobras Currently Represents Value For Investors But Is Still High Risk [View article]
CV: As usual..., A well researched and thought out thesis. I agree (as do many SA authors I've talked to recently)PBR has to much Rouseff BAGGAGE! . I would rather put my $$$ on OXY(another company that you recently did some fine research on..). Appears there's "mucho" potential with OXY without "the baggage". I do have a question. I understand that automobile fuel(gas) sells for the equivalent of $5.00US a Gallon in Brazil. At that price.., why isn't PBR making money? (I'm sure that CVX's and XOM's operating expenses are half again that of PBR's.). BAX
