  • Russia GDP to contract 3% in 2015 [View news story]
If oil stays below $50, there is no way Russian GDP declines by only 3%. More than likely several multiples of that. Companies are pulling out left and right and Russians are trying to get their money out of Russia by all means possible. Not a pretty picture.

Putin dramatically underestimated the resolve and cleverness of the US. This already is, and will continue to, hurt much more than he expected.

  • Germany, ECB take tough line against Greece [View news story]
Lohengrin: Agreed mostly, except that the crisis for Iceland is not yet over as they still have capital controls to this very day. If they let the people move their money freely, they'll get their money out of there as fast as possible. So they're nowhere near out of the woods yet...

  • Germany, ECB take tough line against Greece [View news story]
No, I am not delusional. Polling in Greece has actually shown that 70% of the population does not want to leave the Euro. Now, you may think the Greeks are delusional for wanting to remain in the Euro, but don't call me delusional because I am simply reporting that fact. Personal attacks are unnecessary.

  • Germany, ECB take tough line against Greece [View news story]
The leaders of the new Syriza party are politically inexperienced and have little senior management experience, increasing their chances of making a critical miscalculation. However, I still believe that level heads will prevail and a deal will be reached that will let both sides save face.

70% of the Greek population does not want to leave the Euro, and the Syriza party has said they also don't intend to leave the Euro. So a Grexit seems unlikely.

In fact, just minutes ago, the new Greek Prime Minister Tsipras has said he's going to work with the European Central Bank to find a solution, already striking a more conciliatory tone than at any during during the campaign.

  • Greece continues to plunge [View news story]
    joeliebig: Fair enough.

What you typically see is that when politicians on the far right or far left get elected, they tend to moderate pretty quickly once they get in office, because they actually have to work with others to get thing done.

So I think Syriza will tone down their rhetoric and demands in regards to the EU, and the EU will work out a deal with them. I believe any deal reached might tie debt repayment to GDP growth, and extend the terms of their loans.

  • Greece continues to plunge [View news story]
joeliebig: I still think that if Greece reaches a deal with the Troika, this thing goes up. 70% of the Greek population does not want to leave the Euro....a Grexit just won't hapen.

  • ISIS attacks oil-rich Kirkuk [View news story]
Taking a closer look at this story, the "attack" seems to have been a minor incursion that was repelled quickly, and does not appear to constitute a significant advance of "ISIS" against Kirkuk.

I don't see this affecting oil supply at all.

  • U.S. rig count plunges another 90 units in ninth straight weekly loss [View news story]
Rig count is decreasing, but production is not (yet) decreasing, because: 1) They are able to get more and more out of existing wells due to improved techniques, and 2) Rigs that aren't outputting hardly anything anyway are the ones being shutdown first.

So it's not necessarily a given that production will be slowing anytime soon.
