  • Westport Looks A Decent Buy Given Its New Focus On Profitability And Cheap Valuation [View article]
Mass generation of power from NG reaches levels of efficiency that vehicles can't touch. Not practical for trucks with current battery technology

  • Has Westport Innovations Peaked? [View article]
I don't think there is a good correlation to the reaction... natural gas has fallen nearly equivalently.

  • Westport Innovations: Buy On The Drop? [View article]
I can't imagine that a fire sale of Westport to JV partners would hold water right now. All that would result is a huge class action over the value of patents and research.

  • Westport Innovations: Stock Price Begs For A Decision [View article]
"It would most likely require a significant fundamental development to shake loose the prevailing pessimistic sentiment and bring investors back to the story"

that would be making a profit.

After years of heavy investment in technology and forming partnerships, if there was anyone awake on the negotiating side of Westport, that time has come . While NG trucking adoption is slow to come in North America, there are revenues, and Weichei, Tata, Electromotive are major players as well as Cummins and Volvo.

The information that is difficult to find but is necessary in addition to numbers given:

    - are operating costs for LNG/CNG higher than diesel trucks.
    - the real lifespan of a truck. talking to the few owners I have been able to ask, 3-5 years is short for a semi and even for a diesel semi engine
    - what capacity of Cummins line producing the 11.9L ISG engine is being used.
    - is Westport's research and development budget planned to continue unabated forever? It's larger than the operating loss

If the big operators find the NG trucks work, they will expand the portion of their fleets and the smaller operators will follow. Data should be coming out reflected as orders within another year as long haul operators have a couple of years under their belts.

  • Westport Innovations: Things Falling Into Place For This Natural Gas Technology Leader [View article]
I agree Westport is interesting as a company but perhaps not so much as an investment. westport- Cummings has not been able to deliver the 11.9 ISG engine while stressing the importance of a fast rollout. Last march (2012), they timelined this critical engine to be out in early 2013. Now we hearing it will be year's end before anything hits the road. CLNE must be very concerned about this slippage, but how much more can be tolerated, i think the stock is suffering from lack of investor confidence on this huge miss.

One other aspect though that is positive for the NG industry whether Westport itself is diluted, taken over by Cummins, is that diesel isn't going to get any cheaper. Adding $80,000 to the cost of a tractor is scary but in the longer term, using NG will continue to make sense. But I agree the infrastructure may be the better investment, this company is quite hard to love

  • Stock Action: Westport Innovations [View article]
I don't need to bash the greenies and agree Westport is a great company in waiting for more than just it's patents. They have been excellent at strategy in allocating their partnership contracts and utilizing capital besides their own. my reservation that could delay this company is the timeframes are not met. Talking now about having the mainline 11.9L on the market in August 2013 is frustrating after spring 2012 declaring it would be very early 2013. I believe they knew this as getting technician training, parts inventories, dealers etc. set up takes time. The delay on this engine must surely affect CLNE also as the 420hp variant is the highway hauler.
