  • Is Microsoft About to Overpay for Skype? [View article]
I'm not really up to date on Facetime, is it still only iPhone to iPhone? And is it still only Wi-Fi? I would imagine not, but haven't read anything.

  • Can Microsoft's Skype Acquisition Restore Its Relevance? [View article]
... ? Maybe I'm confused but it seems that you're saying Windows Phone 7 is 7-8 years behind? You do realize the first generation iPhone was just released 4 years ago, right?

I guess we could dispute whether the platform is competitive with iOS or Android or RIMM today, but to me your statement is similar to saying RIMM's playbook would have been a successful product 7 or 8 years ago. I guess you'd be right but it would seem unconstructive in an argument of whether it can compete with an iPad; for example.

Thanks for the article. Definitely interesting, and I agree its tough to quantify what exactly Windows Phone 7 bring to the company. My point though was that I agree with Jaremi that the Nokia alliance is a strong positive for MSFT and Bing, which this article supports:

"Speaking longer-term, Microsoft’s alliance with Nokia, which will see Windows Phone 7 ported onto the latter’s hardware, has the potential to radically change the current smartphone game. In a March note, research firm IDC predicted that Windows Phone 7 will eventually surpass RIM and Apple’s iOS to become the second-most ranked smartphone operating system in the world by 2015."

MSFT probably could be more forthcoming with some hard numbers which could possibly benefit stock price or at least give investors something to measure. I'm not that concerned about this though as sales numbers are hard to extrapolate growth scenarios from at such an infant phase of a product like this. For myself its just reassuring to see them staying relevant in the accelerating smartphone market.

That being said, I obviously wouldn't make a bet on MSFT strictly as a smartphone play, but I would stay away if they were ignoring the importance. As flat as the stock's been for as long as its been, I have faith that fundamentals eventually move stocks. The market loves to hate the "non-Innovators" but they manage to produce good earnings quarter after quarter. I haven't been an investor for many years though, maybe I'm just naive to think that the market won't ignore value like that forever.

Declining operating system? Windows Phone 7 was released 7 months ago and has received great reviews by most. I'll agree that Nokia is declining but it still has the greatest global market share for mobile phones... I'd say that's decent exposure for MSFTs mobile push.

  • Intel (INTC +0.2%) says new Ivy Bridge processor chips based on a new "3-D" manufacturing technique will be produced by the end of the year - giving the company a strategy to keep Moore's Law (suggesting that transistor density doubles every two years) going along despite what some thought were physical limits, using a "skyscraper"-like approach.  [View news story]
