  • Apple: About To Show You The iMoney? [View article]
The iWatch is critical to the delivery of a usable payments system otherwise swiping your credit card will be easier than taking out your phone and bringing up an app to pay for groceries.

  • Are People Afraid Of Apple? [View article]
This is no different than what Rush Limbaugh has done in politics.

Standing behind the shield of freedom of speech these people are playing with the gullible, unsophisticated, public. They are no different than ordinary conmen.

I agree that the Apple ecosystem has a great deal of room for improvement. But I notice that Apple keeps making important improvements. The developer conference will be interesting to watch.

Don't agree about iWatch. I think 80% of iPhone users will buy an iWatch. It will be that useful.

Wait till Apple ships a very small iPhone and you'll see how that takes off. It'll be called the iWatch.

You've hit nail on the head. What you have just described is the Apple difference.

I use a MacBook Pro (3yrs old), iPhone and iPad. Can pick up any of them and do most of what I need on any of them. The synching just works, texts, mail, photos, contacts, etc.. Haven't rebooted my Mac in months, must have 20 Word documents open, same for excel, and who knows how many browser windows and tabs, and the machine chugs along just fine. Used Dell PCs for many years, windows was pretty good, but the Mac is terrific. The trackpad is amazingly precise. Tried using my son's Sony trackpad and it was horrible. Small thing like that makes a world of difference.

Certainly the same could be said for the cell phone. Who knew how much we needed it. Try to live without it today.

Yes, I have two of them and I like them. They have an app for the remote on the iPhone and iPad which makes the experience much better, but it only simulates the remote and provides a keyboard. Why it doesn't have a much richer user interface, I don't know. It definitely could have one because the touch screen is much more intuitive to use.

  • Apple (AAPL +2%) roundup: 1) Jim Cramer states Apple is "becoming the J.C. Penney of tech," while suggesting sentiment has become too negative. 2) The state-owned Chinese press has become more positive on Apple following Tim Cook's apology letter. 3) The USPTO has reaffirmed the Oct. invalidation of Apple's "rubber-banding" patent, which was successfully asserted against Samsung. 4) Apple has hired much of the team behind the original Segway, including robotics expert John Morrell. No word on what project Morrell is working on. (Goldman[View news story]
I am not so sure that Tim Cook will not be effective at Apple. I believe he will make his impact on the company in his own way.

He has said several times that China will be Apple's largest market. I believe he I has the kind of personality to make a deal with the Chinese government that positions Apple to take the lions share of the smartphone market there through China Mobile. If Apple makes that happen, then we should see some good growth and Cook will be a hero.

The traders, who are driving the stock price, have the patience of a two year old. Anything that doesn't happen within the quarter is too long for them.

  • Citing upcoming catalysts, UBS puts Apple (AAPL +1.6%) on its Most Preferred list, helping shares outperform in early trading. The firm was among the first to raise alarm bells about iPhone order cuts. Apple is now up 11% from its March 4 low. [View news story]

  • "Here's a novel way to drive up a company’s share price," writes the NYT's Jeff Sommer. "Pay billions of dollars in additional taxes." Forensic accountant Robert Olstein reckons that companies such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Cisco (CSCO) should repatriate the tens of billions dollars they hold abroad, pay tax on it, and then use the rest of the cash to repurchase stock. That would boost their share prices by at least 20%. [View news story]
I believe income taxes paid to foreign countries are credited against US income tax. If the foreign income tax is lower than the US rate the company would have to pay the difference.

  • Another day, another low-cost iPhone (AAPL +1.3%) report. RBC's Amit Daryanani says his checks indicate a cheaper iPhone with a plastic case and a 4" non-retina display is on the way. He thinks it will arrive in the June/July timeframe, sell for less than $400, and (after modeling various scenarios in a spreadsheet) add $22B in sales and $5 in EPS to Apple's 2014 results. For those keeping score, RBC, Jefferies, KGI Securities, Sterne Agee, and Goldman have all predicted a cheaper iPhone will arrive, but the details they provide vary plenty. [View news story]
I wonder if Apple has made a deal with The Chinese government who I believe owns China Mobile to somehow give Apple preferences over Samsung. Lets remember Samsung is a Korean company and I don't think the Chinese and the Koreans get along all that well. If this is the case it would be quite a feather in Cook's hat. He hinted at something like this several times when he said that China would be Apple's biggest market. It feels to me that something is cooking (pun intended).

  • Apple's March Uptrend Is No Sucker Rally [View article]
Don't agree that an iWatch is a fringe product. It might be more like an ($200 to $300?) add-on product that complements the use of your iPhone. Things like making payments, seeing texts and other alerts without taking out your phone can be very useful.

When I am home I don't always have my iPhone with me and I often miss a call that I would have liked to take. Even if the watch just told the other person to hang on, or say I will call right back, it would be very useful.

Seeing my VIP emails light up on my iPhone screen near me was a valuable feature for me. It kept me in touch in real time, something that is important to me and I think a lot of other people.

  • After years of operating independently, collaboration between Jony Ive's design team and Apple's (AAPL) "human interface" team (led by Greg Christie) has been growing, the WSJ reports. It probably doesn't hurt Ive was put in charge of both groups last fall, following Scott Forstall's departure. The paper adds Ive wants the next version of iOS to have "a more 'flat design' that is starker and simpler;" this dovetails with expectations Ive would push for Apple to abandon skeuomorphic software/UI design. [View news story]
I don't see that Skeuomorphics are used very much on the iPhone or iPad. iBooks, iPhoto, Newstand, and Contacts on the iPad use it but I haven't found many more places. It does lead to some inconsistencies between apps. I would like to see all apps be a bit more standardized, especially where the buttons are placed. Put the trash can and Done button in the same place in all apps. Little things like that make the product a bit smoother to use.
