  • Is Gold Ever An Investment? [View article]
    Paulo,
If I buy a stock that doesn't pay dividends, I fail to see what building value has to do with it as it is only a potential profit until I sell it to someone else, the same as gold and silver.

    Paulo,
I disagree, jewelry doesn't amount to much gold when refined, its like dumping the last of your beer to water the lawn. If someone is selling gold jewelry then they have already sold the silver. Bullion holders are just that, holders. Sale of jewelry may make a small blip, but won't flood the market. Gold, silver and stocks all go up and down, "ya pays your money and take your chances".

There are many questions about how much those ETFs actually hold that is unencumbered. Paper ETFs that don't allow a normal investor to receive the underlying metal when demanded are a dangerous way to play the market. MF Global showed that even allocated stores of PMs are not truely safe. To me, if it isn't within reach I don't own it.

I agree that farmland is a great investment, but these days extensive DD has to be done on water accessibility and water rights. The central valley in California has farmland sitting idle because of State mandated water use regulation. This is a problem that is only going to get worse.

    Paulo,
If I understand your definitions correctly then stocks that don't pay dividends are speculations. So APPL has only been a speculative play on the market? I submit that it doesn't matter which market you play then (I realize that APPL has announced a first ever dividend, but am using it as an example). One difference I would like to point out in precious metals is that if the stock crashes and becomes worthless you have nothing, if you have physical PMs and the spot crashes I can use them to play checkers (sorry, I have an odd sense of humor sometimes).

  • The Solar Bubble Has Officially Burst - Survivors Will Ultimately Capture More Market Share [View article]
    Gebby,
I think where we differ is that I see solar as part of the solution in a multi tech set of solutions. I may be reading you wrong, but you come across as solar being the only answer with no steps in between. From where I am sitting solar has a lot of potential but needs more improvement and so do energy storage systems to make solar viable. I still haven't heard anyone discuss recycling old solar panels to recover and reuse resources.

  • A group of California students suggests equity offers the solution to high college tuition and the student debt issue. It suggests public universities - in lieu of charging tuition - take 5% of students' salary for the first 20 years after graduation. Isn't that called the state income tax?  [View news story]
    DIG,
They are talking about public college not private for profit college.
The student decides the degree not the school. Administraters that run the college don't have tenure and have no more job security than anyone else. The State sets the costs for the courses at a public college.

Hmmmm.. An interest free 20 year loan from a State that is basically bankrupt? I think they need to shut down the economics department, it is obvious that no one is learning anything there.

I know that common sense dictates your view of multiple sources. That was my point.

    Hi SD,
I know that a few (very few) companies have done this, but Gebby specifically stated charging with solar panels. Of those very few companies how many charged with solar panels and would it work at a more northern clime?

    Gebby,
You can plug into solar power all night long and you won't get zip. Is everybody going to have to work night shift so they can charge their cars during the day?
