  • 'The Death Of The 'Millionaire Next Door' Dream' - A Reply [View article]
"Michael Hiltzik took what could have been a "feel good" story and ended up with something quite different."

I don't think that was an accident. "Don't pay attention to the story about the frugal man who saved millions! Don't think you can do that! You're doomed!" seems like a pretty popular story line these days.

  • Is The Jury Ready? Time To Evaluate AbbVie Post-Spinoff [View article]
"a couple of who lost it all by holding to the bitter end. All this in 2008."

JJR- why was 2008 "the bitter end?" You seem to be implying that your friends were forced to sell at the bottom. How come?

  • DGI Investing: It's Riskier Than You Probably Think [View article]
Yeah, I saw that line ("one-size-fits-all") and skipped straight to the comments. When an article starts with a whopper like that, I figure it's a lost cause, and maybe I can get some entertainment from the comments section, at least.

  • What You Can Do To Perhaps Avoid Dividend Cuts [View article]
"Another common practice used by DG investors is to establish a rule to sell in the case of long-term underperformance. "

What are your definitions of 'underperformance'?

  • Investors: Is Researching Stocks A Total Waste Of Your Time? [View instapost]
"Even if you concluded, based on your research, that a stock is underpriced, there must be someone on the other side of the trade willing to sell that stock to you. That person or institution has reached the opposite conclusion. Why would you assume you are right and they are wrong?"

Not only do I find that reasoning to be incorrect, it verges on downright insulting.

  • Why Deere & Company Is An Investment Opportunity Right Now [View article]
ferjen: I am not following your logic. If the 5-yr. avg. P/E is 14, and we are now at 9, isn't this the best part of the cycle (or at least a relatively good part) to buy in?

  • Don't Own A Company If You Wouldn't Display It On Your Wall [View article]
    "In your opinion, perhaps."

Definitely in his opinion. 'ForeverHungry' asked for thoughts, TRI gave his. I don't see that he's advocating anyone else follow his exact reasoning. I'm surprised at how much he's getting jumped on here.

  • Don't Own A Company If You Wouldn't Display It On Your Wall [View article]
"How does owning shares in MO or PM contribute to the harm the products do to people who chose to use them?"

But that's not what TRI said -- he said that "[he] would not feel good about profiting from a product that on balance causes harm". Not that owning the shares actively harms product users.

  • Whole Foods, Wal-Mart And The Coming Commoditization Of Organic Grocers [View article]
Meh. We go to both Target and Trader Joe's on a regular basis. Whole Foods is a little too far out of the way for us, besides being very expensive.

  • You Are Responsible For Your Investing Decisions [View article]
" if you aren't one of those people, let 's not be too smug about the self reliance stuff, eh?"

Weird. I didn't get any sense of anyone being smug in these comments. I don't see how saying "You are responsible for your financial decisions" translates into 'smug'.

  • The Positive Psychology Of Dividend Growth Investing [View article]
"rising rates (and falling prices) have no relevance to me. "

I believe that's correct. I own several bonds, and plan to hold them to maturity. Once purchased, the market price is irrelevant.
