  • Is Carnival Cruise Lines Being Sabotaged? [View article]
It would be interesting to know how much the marine insurance for CCL ships (and other cruise lines for that natter) went up since last year this time, only 4% perhaps?

  • Is Carnival Cruise Lines Being Sabotaged? [View article]
For the quarter, Carnival reported a profit of $37 million, or five cents a share, compared with a loss of $139 million, or 18 cents a share, a year earlier. The most-recent quarter included $28 million of unrealized losses on fuel derivatives while the year-ago included $21 million in gains from them. - How did they do it?: "Perhaps on the expense on maintenance cost...."

  • Royal Caribbean Shares About To Get Hit With Norovirus Reports [View article]
Cruising industry is a risky business: Its profitability strongly depends on unpredictable events like marine accidents, infectious disease outbreaks, cost of fuel, bad weather, and more strict safety and environmental regulations that are being drafted on both sides of the ocean. Also, Costa Concordia story is not over yet. I am short CCL.

  • A Statistical Analysis Of S&P 500 [View article]
Interesting findings and a good study! Obviously Gaussian distribution does not fit the market very well. Perhaps a better fit would be Weibull distribution or a truncated Gaussian, or something else. Have you had any thoughts about it?

  • Carnival Cruise Lines' (CCL) Carnival Triumph is to be towed to the port of Progreso in Mexico after a fire in the ship's engine room caused it to become adrift 150 miles off the country's Yucatan peninsula. None of the 3,143 guests, nor the 1,086 crew, were hurt in the accident. Carnival has cancelled the Triumph's next two cruises. It's just over a year since the company's Costa Concordia capsized in Italy, killed 32 people. [View news story]
Costa Concordia disaster, Seychelles accident, New Year flu epidemic, and now this. How much of a stock buy back it will take to offset this accident?

  • First Solar (FSLR -7.7%) tumbles after receiving a downgrade to Negative from Positive from Avian, which claims the junction boxes accompanying First Solar's solar module installations are suffering from reliability issues. Avian, which smartly upgraded First Solar in May, notes the warranty on First Solar's modules lasts for 20 years. Solar stocks in general are selling off (TAN -1.9%) following a critical NYT column about Chinese production. TSL -3.5%. STP -3.5%[View news story]
Thank you Avian; I was able to buy the stock cheap.

  • A123 Systems (AONE -7.3%) has plunged to new lows in the absence of major news. Shares have triggered short-sale curbs, but given they now trade at a paltry $0.224, brokers are probably reluctant to lend shares regardless. 19.6% of A123's float was shorted as of Aug. 15. A123 was hurt last week by news GM is temporarily halting production of the Chevy Volt. [View news story]
I bought 1$ leap call options for 0.05, i.e. at the lowest possible discount, but then stocks at 0.15 would be even a better deal, worth the risk.

AONE became a promising penny stock, a candidate for a near future acquisition. The only question is by whom and by how much.

  • First Solar: 10% Dip On The Horizon [View article]
The american tragedy is that, ever since the so called "up-tick rule" regulation was removed in 2007 from the trading, most of new technology companies have been at the mercy of any large group of short sellers. The "up-tick rule" was a post depression regulation that prevented short sellers to drive a perfectly good company to the ground. So, biased blogs with an agenda do not make much difference in this case, by my opinion.

Yeah, CIGS appear to be a dead end in the evolution of thin film panels, at least for now.

Thank you, AGA7d; this explains some of the story. Your understanding appears better than that of some who wrote about FSLR lately.
