  • NY Times examines Summers' bid for Fed chairmanship [View news story]
I can tell that all (or most of you) who commented are older and white and almost all of your comments were polite and to the
point. Much appreciated. I am really afraid of who will take Bernanke's place and hope he will remain on call for the President.

The President is "of the people" and to me much preferable to the billionaire we could have had. FDR was an elitist but finally realized the people he saw on the way to work weren't bums sleeping on the street. They had nowhere to go and no money.

He had a heart and a conscience.

Remember Reagan and the "Trickle Down Economics"? Almost as soon as he said it we got to learn new catchy phrases like "jobless recovery". Still going now. We were just being initiated and groomed for accepting it.

This isn't the America that I grew up in and loved. I truly had a lot of hope in the President.

Wish we could see some answers to the economic problems.

  • The "widespread impression" is that "Texas is corrupt, callous, racist, theocratic, stupid, belligerent, and most of all, dangerous," writes Erica Greider in a new book. Greider sets out to counter this perception and explain why America should learn from the Lone Star State. The economy is thriving, helped by weak government, strict lending laws, Nafta, mass immigration and generous business incentives, not to mention lots of oil. [View news story]
Since 1948, that I know of, Texas has never suffered from a recession like the rest of the country. Long, long before Perry.
We are dead last in public education now, in the nation. And
also in the percentage of people who have insurance coverage.
Perry and the legislature have gutted our education funds and
so far refused to put it back while giving millions in tax breaks
for a racetrack to be built here. Cronyism is rampant here.I have
lived here all my life and the only ones talking about secession is our untruthful journalists looking for a story. I consider Perry an embarassment.

  • Medicare saves money, Paul Krugman argues: Yes, adjusting for inflation, Medicare spending per beneficiary rose more than 400% from 1969-2009. But inflation-adjusted premiums on private health insurance rose more than 700% over the same period. "So while it’s true that Medicare has done an inadequate job of controlling costs, the private sector has done much worse."  [View news story]
    Howdy, from Texas:

Don't let an insular lifestyle keep you from knowing what is really going on with this country.

Free markets and liberty (?) Like Goldman Sachs?:

    Corporate Welfare
Clinton left office with a surplus in the coffers.
    Enron
BP oil spill due to negligence

Millions of dollars intended for Katrina disaster here diverted to redo Governor's mansion.

40% of Texans don't have health insurance.

No control of our borders. And none wanted. Cheap labor.

Illegal aliens here can get legal drivers licenses which opens the door for lots of other things.

Food stamps and free medical care for illegal aliens. This translates into mucho dinero which goes to Mexico while we subsidize this.

Many of our poor and elderly Texans do without adequate food, health care, necessary medicine and then die in the heat.

City of Houston has even set up little buildings so illegals can solicit handyman jobs from the locals. Cash paid, no taxes.

Our schools now rank toward the bottom nationally. And we hire teachers from Mexico.

I just can't say enough about how beloved free markets are!
