In order for apple to really make dent in msft windows monopoly is by lower prices on their products... and that's not going to happen without lower margins. In other words.. msft is concerned... not worried.
And in the 80s we used floppy drives. ;) I'm not sure why you're bringing up 80s as your defense.... so if you want do stuff in 2013s.. then laptop.. if you'd like to go back and play wolfenstein... buy a tablet?
I've worked as an independent contractor in the database space for over a decade now. Which means I've been exposed to company small and big (companies include: JPMorgan, UBS, BofA to name a few). OSX is not going to replace Windows. Not any time soon. You're only seeing this from the consumer perspective. If you're running a mom and pop boutique shop with 5 employees, change is easy, relatively speaking. When you have an enterprise with 5000 employees... this is no small feat... virtually impossible. However, these corporations usually are a bit slower when it comes to OS adoption. For security purposes and cost purposes. They often skip versions. If they recently upgraded to Win7 they are in no hurry to jump on the Win 8 bandwagon. But this does not necessarily mean OSX is going to replace all of windows. You're sadly mistaken. Go check out OSXs market share numbers... even with this massive level of IOS adoption. In the consumer space, you can swap from one platform to another with ease and you can be "de-throned" pretty quickly... not in the enterprise. This shift will take years.. if not decades.
The problem with social gaming is that they are, so far, very short lived. You need to re-invent yourself over and over again. And that's not easy to do.
Really? MSFT will be a gaming console company? Why not kill that off?
MSFT is not a one trick pony (well, kind of) but they do a lot more than windows. You really think apple and android will take over all of msft's business? Windows Phone is actually very good... I wouldn't call it a sure winner but it certainly is enough to make one think when making smartphone decisions. And right now, that's enough to make a dent in the market share. Not everywhere in the world is as mature as the US in smartphone penetration. MSFT knows this... AAPL knows this (hence the lower priced iphone chatter).... it's time for you to stop drinking US Koolaid and wake up.
I bet if palm pre had 90%+ current user base, their next iteration would not have killed off that monopoly overnight. In order for MSFT's "monopoly" to becoming irrelevant overnight as you and Jeach are suggesting, there needs to be a superior (not competent.. not parallel.. but superior) alternative. All the apps that are written for windows.. will need their versions to be rewritten. This is not the case. I've used Windows 8 and I much prefer it over Windows 7. I can't wait to see what's next for the platform. People are complaining about it really have not used it. But the best thign about windows is... even with poor marketing and all the negative opinions surrounding the product, people are going to use it. They do not have any other options. Like you said.. it's a monopoly and this monopoly will drag on a bit longer than 5 years.
Excellent and honest comment. Only thing I'd like to add however is that it's not crucial for WP to try to convert OSX users. However it is critical for iphone to try to convert Windows users. It would be a great win for windows if they are able to convert large portion of their current windows based users to win8 + wp8 ecosystem without converting anyone from the OSX camp. OSX is small fish in the grand scheme of things.. IOS, different story.. but most IOS users are just using Gmail accounts anyways. It would be nice.. and they'll need to attract OSX users in the future (possibly) but conversion is not their main focus at the moment... their primary target is current windows or android user.. and mostly new smartphone users. Hence their focus on non-US markets. IOS is playing catch in most places not named United States.

Google doc is no office. They do feel threatened.. yes.. but it's impressive how they have already reacted to this "threat" .. .they also have their true office offering on line. Office 365. It's far and away... head and shoulders... leaps and bounds.. better than google docs. Google docs is a kids toy compared to office. Let's not go there.
Google missed it by not introducing a more feature rich system from the beginning... should not have allowed ms to respond/react. If you don't believe these are important features, tell me why openoffice has not completely killed off ms office?
MSFT knows more about where technology is heading than you're giving them credit for. They didn't come up with office 365 overnight. They didn't come up with skydrive overnight. They didn't come up with win 8 overnight. They saw the writing on the wall and they have been turning their ship around for years.... right now they're doing it better than apple, arguably. They are, finally, shipping quality products.
