  • Despite relative calm of late, the post-crisis "high volatility regime" remains in place, says MKM's Jim Strugger. This should give the VIX (VXX) an embedded floor in the mid-teens as it awaits the next shock - "a matter of when, not if." [View news story]
The daily volume on the VXX, since early October, has been about 2x to 3x of its average daily volume, most of which has been on the buy side. Once price holds above the 63ema, 41.10, which has been resistance since June, VXX could double.

  • Ampio Pharmaceuticals Moving Up Steadily On Pipeline Gains [View article]
The adage "buy the rumor, sell the news" was certainly germane to Monday's trading action in AMPE. At yesterday's close, the 'long legged doji candlestick' formation suggested the day rally was over. The 8ema, 3.23, may offer support. If that fails 3.03, the 34ema would be considered a reasonable entry. Since the longer term 20sma has recently crossed the 50sma to the upside, the intermediate term low should not violate 2.94. Yesterday, I exited 1/2 of my holdings and re-entered, today, at 3.23.

  • Tellabs: Cheap Like Cisco, But With Better Downside Protection [View article]
TLAB''s balance sheet deserves accolades. Their lack of significant debt assumption is a long standing TLAB tradition. What does not deserve accolades are 1) the skill set resident in the senior leadership and 2) the 'has been' product line.
Because of the balance sheet strength I intend to get long the stock only when it bounces off the 10 year low hit in 4Q08, 3.10. If the Fed does not inject QE3 into the economy soon, the 3.10 target may be around the corner.
