  • Japan's household spending surged 2.4% in January, easily beating expectations for a 0.4% rise. The jobless rate, meanwhile, eased to 4.2% from December's 4.3%, in line with forecasts. On the downside, the core consumer price index slipped 0.3% in January, down 0.2% from a year earlier, matching projections. February core CPI for central Tokyo - a leading indicator of price movements - was flat in February but down 0.6% from a year earlier. [View news story]

  • Is The U.S. Building An Unsustainable Welfare Support System? [View article]
Have to pipe in with a comment on how adoption was once a loving option for unwed mothers in America. But in the 1960s there were concerted and successful policy initiatives to prevent white families from adopting black babies and discouraging white/black foster parenting, effectively takng that choice away from the mother and the potential adoptive parents. Over the decades since, we have seen middle class families who would otherwise have been willing to bring black and mixed-race into their families participating in--at great expense, to cite one example--the Chinese government-run meat market for female children.

Thanks for the quick reply. My query has nothing to do with whether the aid is recv'd in form of public housing or as Section 8 but rather with how your catalog of available resources may have been playing out for well over a decade in the real world example of our POTUS's fraternal aunt's life in poverty in the Boston area.

I find it comically ironic that her nephew (having amassed considerable wealth from his books) constantly demagogues about the "neediest among us" and our "fair share" yet he gets a free pass on Aunt Zeituni's living at the expense of MA taxpayers. I realize that my sense of irony is different than the typical MA voter but "[son of her] brother, can you spare a dime?"

Some people are apparently comfortable seeing their relatives incur huge societal costs instead of practicing private charity.

Excellent piece, Mr. Santos. Since you used Boston, MA as an example I couldn't help but wonder how this plays out with a single woman in public housing, take Aunt Zeituni for example.

  • United Technologies (UTX) unit Pratt & Whitney is reportedly "99% sure" that a crack in an F-35 engine turbine blade was not caused by "the worst-case scenario of high-cycle fatigue," which could entail an expensive design change. Instead, engineers think other factors that are easier to solve, such as high heat exposure or a manufacturing problem, could be at the root of the fault. The jets have been grounded since the crack was discovered last week. [View news story]
About 15 years ago I visited a small factory in CT that produced titanium components for P&W and Rolls Royce engines. I was astounded by the complexity of the supply chain and its fragility, as there was one man in charge of the very amazing lathe on which the blades were produced.

That said, long a small piece of UTX and would like to acquire more.

  • The Place Where Supermarkets Make 12%+ Revenue Growth: Africa [View article]
Totally off SA stock talk track, and welcome aboard adamac. Are you aware of Ghanian El-Anatsui? He's becoming a brand in US, has great internet presence, and his art/installations are very compelling, marketable. Museums and galleries are on board. If I could afford a piece and had the tableau to hang it, I'd buy in.

Also wish I could tag along on your trips to Africa but I'm a landlocked householder with kids and a small business. And I encourage any reader of this post to experience El-Anatsui for yourself and see if he withstands your aesthetic due diligence. There is a big show at the Brooklyn Art Museum now.

A simple, sensible thesis and interesting article Mr. Namavar. It gives those of us who want to expand our investing horizons a good starting point for further research.

  • The countdown begins to the Fed trotting out members to walk back yesterday's FOMC minutes after the big miss on the Philly Fed Index. New Orders fell to -7.8 from -4.3. Prices paid 8.9 vs. 14.7. Six-month indicators actually improved though, rising to 32.1 from 29.2, the 3rd consecutive increase. (full report[View news story]

  • The WSJ takes issue with the assertion by the White House, and echoed by the NYT, that "a range of economic studies" show that increasing the minimum doesn't "measurably" hurt jobs. That "grossly misstates the weight of the evidence," says economist David Neumark, with 85% of studies finding "a negative employment effect on low-skilled workers." Especially hard hit are young black adults, the WSJ argues. [View news story]
Perhaps the fact that he and his buds can't tell you "what they last paid for either" as customers indicates that he and his buds are comfortable with the purchasing power (i.e., demand elasticity) that Moms & Dads grant them and have yet to experience the glories of minimum-wage work for themselves.

  • Shares of Monster Beverages (MNST +3.3%) turn higher after word leaks that the company plans to change its labeling from "supplement" to "food" on some of its products. Though speculation over the impact of the development  focuses on the potential for the company to grab more sales from buyers with food stamps, that extra benefit could also be wiped clean with the swipe of a legislative pen. [View news story]

A logical evolution for the bizarro nation we're living in: if we have as many people on food stamps as there are citizens of Spain, it follows that you cannot unjustly deprive those 48 million of access to Monster, Red Bull and 5-hour Energy drinks.

How else are they going to muster up the energy to get up off the couch and go grocery shopping "for the children"?

  • Following over a year of talks, United Technologies (UTX) unit Pratt & Whitney has reportedly finalized a contract to supply 32 engines for the fifth batch of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters. A preliminary deal in December 2011 was worth $1.12B and was for 30 engines, with the final value of the agreement appearing to be just over $1B. Pratt hopes to secure an initial contract for the sixth set of jets in the coming weeks. [View news story]
Lots of negative news on the F-35 just three weeks ago, but it seems procurement will continue even with sequestration looming.

  • Heads are already rolling at CNN with top exec Jeff Zucker still fresh on the job. The network's managing editor will quit and personalities James Carville and Mary Matalin are reported to be ending their long relationship at CNN. Though the Time Warner (TWX -0.9%) property suffers from embarrassingly-low prime-time ratings, analysts think the CNN brand (cable + online) still has great potential to generate profits if Zucker pushes the right buttons. [View news story]
Mary Matalin will be the solitary furloughed CNN worker who did not vote for Obama.
