Forgive me Geoffster if I am mis-characterizing you, but the use of "Regardless" and "notwithstanding" in two short sentences suggest you are a "moderate" and operate with a "disinterested" view of our ruling class. I sense from your use of "improving" that is not necessarily the case, and that you are instead applying your Winston Smith skills, which we all need to bone up on.

  • Private payroll growth in clear downtrend [View news story]
If we just start measuring productivity by number of waking hours spent gazing at smartphones the US economy would be booming.

I feel sorry for the citizenry and the position the Fed has worked us into, but no sympathy for the oligarchy at the Fed...they'll be just fine as generations yet to be born absorb the consequences.

  • Consumer Confidence falls sharply to 71.2 [View news story]
Because of the shutdown? Never been a fan of Fleetwood Mac, but these lyrics immediately came to mind:

Tell me, tell me, tell me lies
    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies
(Tell me lies, tell me, tell me lies)
Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)

Seems like abundant supply and depressed demand, despite increased appetite for foodstuffs. I want a small position but am sitting by waiting for a deeper discount to get in.

"The shut-down hurt more people than seems to be commonly realized" ... I agree, the damage done to WW2 vets trying to tour DC and to domestic and foreign tourists trying to visit Yellowstone and being held hostage in the lodge needs to be more commonly realized, and those responsible for those indignations need to be "hurt" with summary dismissal and loss of health care and pension benefits.

Very interesting and well-written article--conversational in tone, gently urges curious readers to dig into your other postings for deeper analysis--and the inclusion of photos is something of a novelty on SA.

  • General Electric: A Comment On A Lifetime Investment [View article]
The latter part of my comment was intended to differentiate between "emotion" in investing and legitimate ethical considerations. To put it another way, I'm personally more comfortable owning alcohol and tobacco stocks than I am holding a firm that helps overreaching government(s) develop, implement and maintain IT used to spy on and control its citizens. Google, for example. I am all for industrial innovation and since my GE holdings originated several decades ago, this is a conundrum.

Good dialog rn & DAG. No Immelt fan. I appreciate the dividend but am concerned about what new zaibatsu is going to emerge over the next several years. I'd prefer to hold a company that builds turbines, medical devices, jet engines, even missles and drones, to one that provides information technology and services to the NSA, HHS and the IRS so they can digitize the American populace...well, except for the undocumented among us.
