  • Retirement Strategy: My 'Buy The Dips Portfolio': When To Add, When To Sell, And My Ultimate Format [View article]
Most brokerage firms have an education section on their website with great resources. CBOE.com and 888options.com have some good material as well.

Start slow, learn the basics (what is a call? what is a put?)...try some real world transactions with small amounts of money to hammer home the book stuff you read.

  • The Day I Sold Everything [View article]
You only lose capital when you sell during downturns. Everything you interact with in your daily activities was made by or sold by a company operating to make a profit.

If you believe in the machine and that companies will adapt to do what it takes to continue growing earnings you will not sell into a downturn, but buy more at discount prices.

I believe the stock market is the best tool I can use to reach my financial goals. I understand that others emotions can get the best of them which is why Asset Allocation is so important.

  • Why We Love Premium Bonds And You Should Too [View article]
Excellent point regarding the decreased duration. The coupon rate is above comparable, newly issued bonds so a rise in interest rates won't affect them as much. They have a head start so to speak.

    tallguyz,
VYM has a higher yield which a lot of investors prefer. Secondly, in calendar year 2008 it outperformed by 4-5% over SPY.

You get a higher income with a little less downside versus owning the index outright.

"I have found that while this approach is not perfect, the average person can understand it, employ it, and probably do just as well, if not better than many of the hot shot stock pickers in the world."

The most important phrase is 'the average person can understand it'. This is important in investing as well as other facets of life.

Wow. Is that how you really feel? Do you not think EVERY generation has had slackers and those not invested in knowing more about the world around them?

Lumping an entire generation into a stereotype like that is narrow minded and offensive. The color doesn't look good on you.

    Gary,
I'd love to see an article on your experience with Bulletshares and how you incorporate them into client portfolios. Have you been through the maturity process with them? How did it go?
