How Big Will iPhone Gaming Be? [view article]
This is the dawn of something very big--- I keep saying it. It's the mobile aspect of iPhone: look the fact that we are no longer tethered to desktops to use all this functionality, while the list of things that it can do grows longer every day...... remember too, that we are only at the 2nd generation!Zune? Msft has NO answer in the mobile space, and in the long run this will sink them more than anything else imo. Sep 01 12:36 PM
Apple's Problems - Bad to the Core? [view article]
I won't be as negative as some of the other commenters, but I'll say this: I was traveling in the western US in the couple of weeks following the 3g iPhone release, and in Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Santa Monica there were lines, long lines, outside of Apple retail stores in all these places. I was wondering when I'd ever seen lines like this outside retail outlets, and I can't remember ever having done so. And we're talking a computer/electronics retailer! Well, I may be wrong, but I think it speaks volumes. Aug 26 12:17 PMThe Great Consumer Crash of 2009 [view article]
Absolutely outstanding analysis--- Seeking Alpha hits a high point with this article. Good heavens how many person-hrs did it take to gather all the info?Unfortunately as grim as the conclusions here are, I'd defy anyone to oppose the thesis here with even 1/10th of the facts that Quinn cites.... Apple: Great Company with Lofty Valuation - Due for Pullback [view article]
I think Krieger is missing the significance of the foothold that iPhone has in the 'mobile space', as the jargon goes. It has no competition more than a year after its introduction, but what it certainly does have is the means to be redefined/expanded into whatever more you'd like it to be, with a couple of clicks. The App Store has seen to that. I think people are just seeing how this will change everything. And again, Apple's vertically integrated platform has no competition because Apple owns all the parts, from hardware to the App Store.
I say hold Apple for the long term; pullbacks are just buying opportunities for this company. Just my opinion. Aug 18 10:27 AM

"Someone tell me otherwise if I am wrong, but I am not worried about the assets in my brokerage account."My understanding is that assets in a margin account are treated differently than those in a non-margin account in the event that a brokerage goes under, David.

E*Trade Plummets Over Mortgage Concerns [view article]
"......frankly, valuations are so out of whack with fundamentals that something has to change in the equity markets."Ah, I'm assuming that you mean we're WAY oversold and will get a bounce or better in the coming weeks, right? I hope so. But after last week, I'm starting to wonder what I "know". Aug 19 06:33 AM

Up early Barry?! I suspect a lot of folks are this AM. How big will the opening gap down be? Then the Fed cuts rates tomorrow, leading to a bounce, maybe. Seems like the only sure bet is going long the VIX! Aug 06 03:31 AMApple's Handheld Computer Revolution [view article]
re: 1st comment--I'd suggest that 'attempts at innovation' might be a more accurate way to put it. As someone who has spent years using Win CE on a top of the line handheld, I am entirely unconvinced that MSFT can make the leap to anything approaching iPhone, on ANY level. And I'm not long AAPL! (yet)What you see on an iPhone is an extension of the elegant Mac environment that has existed for years. MSFT would have to do something totally out of character to counter it. Something nimble... can you see it? If Melcher's thesis that iPhone may be the catalyst that moves us all away from our desktops, where all we'd need is a screen, net access and an iPhone/next gen iPhone, MSFT may really be caught flat-footed on this one. It hardly seems like a stretch, to me.

Why eBay Needs Google [view article]
I think that the tenant/landlord analogy has merit. It's as though the tenant becomes so fixated on the cost of its prime location that it loses its head for a moment and to 'punish' the landlord decides to try not using the space and trying life as a takeout establishment for a while. It appears to have been an own-foot-shooting.
Or, maybe it was nothing but an attempt at an objective assessment of Google's impact on eBay's business. As Melcher points out, can we draw any conclusion regarding the speed at which eBay returned to business as usual, but that involvement with Google is utterly vital to it? Albeit with grumblings about not using Google as much as they had previously, which one would expect. A week was enough to clear up questions about whatever they were wondering about and go back to maximizing income, I suppose. Jul 10 01:26 AM
