Second thought, this is why I say why not steal the succesful ideas of your competitors, differentiation can be attained after succesful branding but is not the same thing.

It would seem GM should work on improving the brand name in the minds of americans, then they might have some pricing power. The problem is these things take time, especially with large purchases like a car. If GM could sell a "Volt" without someone thinking GM/Chevy but instead Toyota, yes they'd be fine. CC needs to change the experience in their customers minds. An example of that kind of change is what is happening at Six Flags. These things take years even with good management and the resulting improved branding. Bad management and we have GM and CC today.

one thing I've noticed: in the small towns the service is better in the big cities where they've hired kids who don't see CC as their future, you get no service. I think this where they need to start self evaluating their situation. I'm sure the big wigs are busy at 50,000 feet and are in fact missing the details.

I think the branding and experience are right on, the stores have committed so much space to TV's everything else is simply a Wal-Mart arrangement, rows of stuff.

I think many valid points are raised here, when I read the WSJ article I was amazed at the poor follow up questions to some of the statements. They had a checklist and simply kept moving. I also have no problem copying what is working at your competitors, this is what makes a small mom and pop hard to go national, the guys can copy and distribute the concept quickly... if they are paying attention.
