I've been using a DGI strategy since the beginning of 2011. I'm an avid reader of articles or comments by David Fish, David Van Knapp, Chuch Carnivale, Dave Crosetti, Richjoy, Robert Samualson, 5 Plus, Norman Tweed, and a few others. I've learned so much from these kind and generous people it's completely unbelievable.
I use David Fish's CCC list as a starting point. I add to that list several other companies (OK....2). I'm not trying to beat the market. Instead, I'm trying to obtain an annualized CAGR of 9% a year using dividends and whatever capital gains happen. I typically will sell off enough stock to recover my initial investment, plus any reinvested dividends, after a stock has appreciated 50% in value
if held in my Roth. It's only been 3 years, but my CAGR so far is 14.5%. I don't expect it to stay that high (I was quite fortunate to invest in HGIC and sell it at almost double my initial investment).
I'm one of those rare people to still have a defined benefit pension. However, I'm fully aware that, as a State of Illinois university employee (NIU - Go Huskies as a shoutout to niuecon) my pension, as currently constructed, is certainly not guaranteed in the future.
