  • Senators yesterday agreed on a bipartisan compromise to expand criminal background checks of gun buyers in a deal that should facilitate a debate in the Senate, although it's expected to meet opposition in the House. The measure calls for checks for Internet sales and those between private parties at gun shows, but not on non-commercial person-to-person deals. Stocks on watch today include Smith & Wesson (SWHC) and Sturm, Ruger (RGR). [View news story]

  • The terms of Greece's bailout will be renegotiated, according to a senior EU official, as the worsening situation there makes the original agreement "an illusion." Anyone who believes differently "is delusional."  [View news story]

  • Bank analyst Martin Weiss says the U.S. economy and stock market are going to get crushed in 2012. The gap between the super-rich and the other 99% of America is now as wide as it was before the 1929 crash. Class warfare coupled with an exploding global population and limited resources will "lead to the mother of all national security issues."  [View news story]

  • "The markets want to force us into doing certain things - and that we won't do," says Angela Merkel in an interview to be aired tonight. "Eurobonds are not the answer" to solving the current crisis ... "This is a hard and arduous path, which we will not be able to avoid by means of some magic bullet."  [View news story]

  • The timing of the release of 60M barrels of oil is a puzzle: The war in Libya, the purported cause of the move, has been raging for months, and prices had already fallen ~10% since April. So why the release now? This isn't really about oil; it's the economy, stupid. Some see it as "a sign of desperation" with prices recovering after a few months.  [View news story]
Did anybody notice the slide in WTI started about an hour prior to News Release?????

  • Worried about short supplies and price pressure at home, China suspends diesel exports. This comes on top of Russia's effective banning of exports of refined oil products. Both countries have domestic price controls and refiners often move product overseas where they can get more for it.  [View news story]

  • Gold vs. silver: Reasons for investing in both still abound, but they're not the same - silver looks more like tulips lately, while gold is still gold. There are key differences: not only in supply of the metals, but the out-of-whack gold-silver price ratio.  [View news story]

  • The CME hikes margins on crude by about 25%. It's the first such increase for oil after a series of margin hikes on silver knocked the stuffing out of that market.  [View news story]
