Dividends: Should I Reinvest Or Not? [View article]
This is the most direct and best reply ever! Thank you. I do own MQY and also ETG and NFJ and I do live off of my dividends and reinvest my "extra dividends". I also do own KKR, LINE and KMP. That's why 60% of my portfolio is in Bonds and only 40% is in Stocks. But, that is also why I follow Doug Albo along with our Dividend Growth Superstars, including my personal favorite Chowder! I do Invest 4 Income and my Income growth comes from Investing my leftovers into the best available options for today's market that fits into my asset allocation plan. If I was 64, I'd sell some 300K paper profits and invest in quality 4% ers or Muni Bond Funds and quit working. Goal met. Meet me on Thursday's for Sushi lunch, Saturday's for Soccer, or any other day for a beer, Superstars beers on me! Best of everything!

Chowder, I see you sold VFC when the dividend dropped below 2%. If CL's dividend dropped below 2%, maybe the P/E rises to 23, would you then sell some or all of the 385K to increase your Income? I like your earlier reply of quality first, but when a stock is grossly overvalued or it has become to big a part of your portfolio, wouldn't you want to increase your Income and increase your diversification with another quality company? Isn't 385K in one stock just too much? Thanks much! BTW, I like Everton. They compete at the highest quality level at a reasonable cost. And I like their goalie and 6'7" striker.

Thanks Dave! Would you rather have a portfolio value of 1 million or 60K in Income? What is your new goal now that your Investment Income exceeds your Income? ( I say both)
Dividends: Should I Reinvest Or Not? [View article]
Beers on me either way, I know I'm benefiting here more than you or Chowder. BTW, my comments will never approach Richjoy. I wouldn't even try. Can I defer my answer to reducing risk by my reply to Chowder above and my previous reply's? Yes, thanks much. No, then I describe reducing my risk through following my asset allocation plan of 60% bonds to 40% stocks and rebalancing monthly. My individual stock positions are no more than 3% of my total portfolio. My fund positions are limited to 8% of my portfolio. Getting back to 385K of CL, I'd reduce this gain to 3% of my portfolio, buy some 4%' ers that I don't already own, or buy something like MQY in a taxable account. I believe the flight to safety has made most Muni Bond funds overbought and overvalued. You would increase your Income and decrease your risk through diversification. The safety of CL over BCE? Or my other suggestions? I believe that's over my pay grade, but I think that selling such a large position could create less risk through diversification and Increase your Income which I thought was our common goal. I just hope to add to the conversation also. I also know that you still enjoy working, awesome! But in reading Chowder's comment about a portfolio simple enough to be run after he's gone, I think of the 3 friends I know of who have had back and neck surgeries. Thank God all 3 have recovered, but if they didn't, wouldn't they rather have 16 to 24K a year in Income rather than the 9K? Just sayin' ha, ha my Superstar friend.

Chowder, Thanks much! While you were writing I was reading all of your previous comments. I checked back to see Dave's response and saw it was yours. Thanks again. I agree with both of you, but when CL and KO and my other core positions run up to 60% of my portfolio, I like to add more bonds or sell some winners to rebalance my portfolio and put those gains to work. I want to increase my income and have a higher portfolio value for more future income. Maybe I'm wrong, but it sure feels better to me.

Dave, why so testy? You write to help and inform people in a creative way and I thank you. I do believe Dividend Growth Investing might be the best way to invest in stocks for the long run. But to never sell winners to create more income? Really? I have 10K to invest this month, buy more KO and CL regardless of the price? I thought we were discussing an option on 385K in CL Paper Profits.I simply suggested buy something like MQY.Let's put some or all of those profits to work to create more Income and decrease our risk. I never said hold the cash for a better buying day. I was never critical of your plan, it Worked! I continue to read the SA Superstars for information and advice. I rarely comment because I am not an authority. Thanks for your time and help answering our questions and comments. I invest in dividend paying stocks to be a partner with them in their profits and growth. Thanks again, this is important to restate after time. Current events and market noise can confuse us at times. Keep the common sense coming Dave!

I like the telecoms T, VZ, BCE and VOD. I also still like MO. PAYX is still a good buy, as is COP. I also like MSFT and INTC. I also still like LMT and SO and KMP still looks good. If I keep all my stocks to 40% of my portfolio and each individual position at 3% I think I'll be OK. This is not a should have answer, it's a what you could do Today answer to Increase your Investment Income Today answer. My Goal is to increase my Investment Income. I like MQY or IQM at today's value. Since I starting investing in 1991, I have watched my stock portfolio drop by 50-60% twice with a major correction in 2002. It wasn't fun. In 2013 my gains took to me to 57% stocks to 43% bonds. With each new monthly purchase I just couldn't get back to 60% Bonds, so I sold some long time winners to reach my Asset Allocation goal. I don't have a pension or SS, therefore I can't be overexposed to a market of stocks. We take home 2x our expenses and reinvest the rest. I follow the asset allocation of Vanguard's Wellesley Income fund. It's risk adjusted return has worked pretty well for them, why not me? Thanks for the help my early riser friend.

Dave, should you have sold your CL somewhere in the past when you didn't believe in the management or when it was grossly overvalued to increase your Investment Income better than the nearly $9000 you receive today? Say you sell your Entire position and buy some 4%'ers. Wouldn't your Investment Income be closer to 16K than your current 9K? Assuming this is in a retirement account. If it wasn't, I would buy a CEF Muni Bond paying close to 6% with leverage and make 24K a year nearly tax-free. And after 30 years of investing, I'd be looking to pare back some of my stock exposure. Please don't let this option start any negatives, I would rather just be polite by offering an option, rather than just throwing out a statement without any alternatives. Getting back to your article, I like to save my monthly and quarterly dividends and buy the best value that fits into my asset allocation for today. Best of everything to all, especially the SA Superstars!

Mike, I'm just killing time with the best odds in the house, while my friends and family lose their fun money. I'm not a gambler at heart, I've been around the Atlantic City casino's since I was a kid and I've worked there also. I can only see the odds in the house's favor. The fun factor just isn't there for me. I'll play you guys in Texas Hold ém at the Investing 4 Income convention though.
