I am an active investor in IP-centric investments for 6 years. I specialize in high risk / high reward situations both public and private. It is important for investors to plan for all outcomes as the litigation surrounding the IP investment takes many twists and turns. Extracting profits and limiting exposure are the keys to success.
I hope to provide information and strategies, which both expert and novice IP investors can profit from.

Markman Advisors specializes in the strategic analysis of investment opportunities presented by intellectual property—and in particular, patent—litigation activities. We are all USPTO-registered patent attorneys with decades of combined experience in patent litigation, licensing and procurement. After many years practicing at some of the world’s largest and well-known law firms, we established and now run a premier intellectual-property boutique law firm, where we continue to practice patent litigation.
We have litigated numerous high-stakes patent cases in federal district courts throughout the country, as well as at the appellate level before the Federal Circuit. We are also experienced in USPTO proceedings, and have advised clients across a wide swath of technical areas with respect to patent-related matters.
Our base of former and current legal clients is diverse, from technology start-ups to some of the world’s largest and most well-known corporations. Collectively, we have led those clients through numerous Markman hearings, summary judgment motions, trials and appeals – on both the offensive and defensive sides of a case.
Our patent litigation experience, coupled with our knowledge of the market for "patent play" stocks, is the alpha we bring to each patent litigation-driven investment opportunity.
We are a group of sophisticated investors with experience in patent litigation, experimental economics, corporate finance and responsible corporate governance. Our member’s comments are carried online by publications such as The Wallstreet Journal, Reuters, CNN, Seeking Alpha and Motley Fool.

Deep due diligence to identify catalysts that move share prices, with the goal of showing how to take advantage of the subsequent overvalued/undervalued opportunities.
I am primarily interested in intellectual property and most healthcare verticals, but I try to write about anything that interests me. My work has been featured on SeekingAlpha, StockTwits, Yahoo Finance, and CNNMoney, among others.
Feel free to message me to discuss potential opportunities and/or Philly sports.
I am an active investor and trader for my own brokerage account. I enjoy the sport of the markets and the challenges it presents every day. I have been reading SEC filings for many years, and I have grown accustomed to the natural resource sector in particular, although I like special situations in almost every sector. The longer I am around the market, the more I am drawn to smaller, lesser known opportunities. I have some free time on my hands and decided to give blogging a chance. I hope you find my writing informative and valuable.

Michael Murphy grew up in Newark, Delaware, which a sign at the city limits proclaimed: “The Educatoinal Center of the State.” After graduating from the public schools he earned an A.B. cum laude from Harvard College and began working as a COBOL mainframe programmer on an IBM 1401 in the mid-1960s. Lured to California by the Summer of Love and better music than American Bandstand in nearby Philadelphia, he became a systems analyst and programmer for American Express, assigned to help integrate their newly-acquired San Francisco investment operations with the parent company's systems in New York. As that project ended early in 1970, a fortuitous opportunity to make a career change to Security Analyst opened up, and he leaped at the chance. His first recommendation was to sell Memorex at $172 at the very bottom of the 1969-1970 bear market. During the subsequent two-year market rally, Memorex went to $2 a share, thus convincing him that it is indeed a market of stocks rather than a stock market.
He earned his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1975, the same year The Capital Group/American Funds acquired the American Express mutual fund group. He commuted to Capital in Los Angeles for over five years, getting on a first-name basis with many flight attendants. After the introduction of the IBM PC in April 1981, he left Capital to found the California Technology Stock Letter. In 1997 he also became the founding editor of Technology Investing, which acquired CTSL in 2003 and changed its name to New World Investor in 2007.
In the 1970s he invented and patented a stock value calculator, and in the 1980s he served as the CEO of two software companies. In 1997 he authored the business best-seller Every Investor's Guide to High-Tech Stocks and Mutual Funds, and he has a forthcoming book on investing in a hyperinflation. In addition to investing, his interests include a biodynamic, organic permaculture farm to raise rare-breed animals, heritage seed crops and children. For many years he held the Class I/E record for electric cars at the Bonneville Salt Flats, and in 2001 he narrowly missed the world record for electric hydroplanes. He expects to go back to Bonneville in 2019 to reclaim the electric car record with his then-16 year old daughter driving. You are all invited to watch or help out.

The two authors are co-managers of a family partnership long/short equity fund since 2001, that have a successful track record in trading primarily small-cap aggressive growth companies based on a fundamental valuation analysis of current news, including quarter reports, guidance, biotech clinical study results and other news. Stern School of Business and the senior partner has an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, including prior MS & BS (Engg.) degrees, and with experience in business strategy consulting to large fortune 100 companies.
We are generally sector and market-cap agnostic, identifying opportunities using a 'stock picking' bottom-up, fundamentals-based, valuation-driven approach. However, we find most opportunities in the small-cap space, in technology & healthcare sectors, with some also found often in the consumer, energy & basic materials sectors.

Orcam Financial Group, LLC (www.orcamgroup.com) is a low fee financial services firm offering asset management, personal advisory, consulting and educational services. Pragmatic Capitalism (http://pragcap.com) was founded by Cullen Roche in the midst of the financial crisis of 2008. Mr. Roche foresaw many of the events that led up to the crisis and felt that the government was slow to react and when it did finally react, responded with the wrong medicine.
Mr. Roche's primary areas of expertise include global macro portfolio construction, quantitative risk management, monetary economics and behavioral finance. Prior to establishing his own business, Mr. Roche worked at Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management where he worked on a team overseeing $500MM+ in assets under management. Upon leaving Merrill Lynch, Mr. Roche managed a private investment partnership for 7 years generating substantial positive alpha (high risk adjusted returns) without a single negative year of returns. He has since transitioned back to retail asset management to better serve the much needed low fee retail space with sophisticated but simple asset management and financial planning services.
Mr. Roche is also a prolific writer. In addition to the daily musings on his website, he is the author of the popular book “Pragmatic Capitalism: What Every Investor Needs to Know About Money and Finance” as well as “Understanding the Modern Monetary System”, one of the top 10 all-time most downloaded research papers on the SSRN academic research network. He was named one of the “Top Wall Street Economists, Experts and Opinion Leaders” of 2011 by Wall Street Economists and was named one of the “101 Best Finance People” by Business Insider where he was described as “one of the most influential economic thinkers today.” In 2015 Mr. Roche was named one of the “40 Under 40” most influential people in finance by InvestmentNews. He is regularly cited in the Wall Street Journal, on CNBC and in the Financial Times.
Mr. Roche is a Georgetown University alumnus, growing up in the DC area and now living in Southern California with his wife Erica, troublesome collie Cal and 4 irritable laying hens.
