  • How To Trade The 8% Yielding Alpine Total Fund Before It Splits And Raises Its Payout [View article]

I wish I hadn't. Was touted it at inception and have been holding it since. Will never get back to basis, I'm sure. Bought three others from the same broker...dumb me. Won't have anything to do with him again. Oddly enough, I haven't heard from him in the past couple of years, either...

Now basis will now be $40. Boy, oh, boy!

  • Dominion Resources Catches MLP Fever [View article]
Thank you for this article, Mr. Gue. I, too, am a long-time holder of Dominion and I will be a buyer of the MLP. I don't mind waiting for it's "full potential" because I'm quite certain Dominion will recompense me nicely while I wait.

  • Has Linn Energy Finally Bottomed? [View article]

D'ya all think Barron's helped to "undervalue them"?

After a day like today, as well as the past couple, most everything is undervalued...

  • Withholding Tax Rates By Country For Foreign Stock Dividends [View article]
Nice to have all the statistics in one good article I came here because one person on an IV message board had 15% withheld for a Norwegian stock whereas I had 25%.

Unfortunately, I came here after I'd called TDAmeritrade and told them I thought that should be 15%. Ooops....

Guess when they call back tomorrow I'd better be ready to apologize for bothering them, shouldn't it!

  • The Most Misleading Words In Investing: You Can't Go Broke Taking A Profit [View article]
Whether right or wrong, I have stopped being AS greedy and when my stocks rise, I wait until I can get my original investment out, and then let the other part run. I had to sell, as an example, 30 shares of JNJ in order to reclaim my original investment dollars. I still have the rest which pays me the dividend (perhaps not so neatly rounded, but who cares?) and allows the stock to run up if it can/will.

BUT, if the market fails, I'll at least have what I started with on a number of issues so I will be able to eat! I've been able to do this on 12 or 13 issues so far and have a few others I could but their dividends are so nice right now I hate to lower them. I know I must and I will...soon.

  • Double Down On These Gaming Stocks [View article]
I would like very much to see IGT increase in price...since I'm down a wee bit over 50% on the issue.

It's the only gaming stock, particularly the machine makers, that I've never made a nice profit on. I don't even like playing their machines which should have told me something right away. I can assure you that if I ever get even near to my basis I will be long-gone, turkey-through-the-corn! Never to return to IGT. You can have all of my shares.

  • Retirement: Am I There Yet? [View article]
That's a good way to look at things, Chowder. Although we did some traveling, we were "saving" the biggest trips (aka most expensive) until retirement when college educations, cars, and weddings were paid for. Like Ray's wife, my husband died at 59, one year before his proposed retirement. So, although I have continued to travel it's not as much fun, nor as costly. In the meantime, the IRA has continued to grow. And this is the point I was getting at: Unless you use a Roth, do not let your IRA's grow too large. My annual RMD is about double of what I need, even with travel expenses. So I am withdrawing and paying taxes at ordinary income rates to put 50% someplace else.

We should have spent more money traveling while young than we did so there wouldn't be so much in the IRA now.

None of us has a crystal ball, so enjoy life now and don't "oversave".

  • When To Sell Your Dividend Stocks [View article]
Interesting outlook. I've always struggled with this good problem, myself. I seem to have a tendency to fall in love with some of my better dividend players and can't bear to see them go.

Wrong way to handle money, that's for sure.

I'm STILL in the "I'll never sell" category because of my age. Your prognositications will not happen during my lifetime, Richjoy403.

  • 10% Dividend Yields From Closed-End Funds [View article]
Sounds good - now. It's too bad I didn't wait, instead of buying when my broker sold it to me, at inception. Needless to say, I'm not making anything like 10%, plus I'll never be back to basis. So I lose both ways.

I have learned two things from this experience (along with FHY and BGY both of which were sold me by the same broker). 1) Never buy on the inception of the Fund and 2) never, ever, again buy from that broker!

And I read their comment as "you send us a copy of the K-1 and we'll prepare and mail the form. Two different takes on the statement.
