  • Don't Expect Pitney Bowes To Slash Its Double-Digit Dividend Yield [View article]
"Do it to me once, shame on thee... do it to me twice, shame on me."

History is full of examples to the effect that there is seldom just "one and done" when it comes to a dividend cut. It's like cockroaches... there never is just one.

Thanks for publishing. The BCI and BCIg appear to have excellent correlation with recessions. Worth keeping an eye on these measures.

It will end... the question is not "whether," but "when."

It will probably be a doozy when it hits.

    Interesting graph.

I am not a gold bug, but I wonder why gold diverged from the expanding monetary Base?

I'm with Robert. Never underestimate the government and its never ending quest to control every aspect of our lives.

  • Undercover COP Paying Dividends [View article]
COP last raised its dividend on Feb. 11, 2011. At that time, the quarterly dividend went to $.66 from $.55.

COP did not raise its dividend in 2012. February 2012 came and went without an increase. Now, February 2013 has come and gone, again without an increase in the dividend.

Isn't it about time for an increase in the dividend? I'll take an increase in the dividend any day over share repurchases.

  • Fourteen banks are reportedly set to reach a $10B settlement with regulators over abusive foreclosure practices such as incorrect paperwork and excessive charges. The banks include the five that agreed to pay $26B in another deal earlier this year - JPMorgan (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), Citigroup (C) and Ally Financial. The latest settlement will allow banks to end a review of 4M loan files that has cost 1.5B so far. [View news story]
This money could have been (and should have been) money that reached shareholders. Think about it. What was really done here is to take money that belonged to the shareholders and give it to our "great leader" to squander on the favorite federal program du jour.

  • AT&T (T) reaches a tentative 4-year deal with a branch of the CWA union that represents 20K wireline workers in 5 states. The deal, which comes ahead of the April 6 expiration of an existing agreement, stipulates annual wage hikes that gradually increase from 2.25% to 3%. It comes shortly after AT&T struck a deal with a CWA branch representing 22K workers. (PR[View news story]

  • Are Intragovernmental Holdings Real Debt? [View article]
    Excellent discourse.

In addition to Maxine Waters, I would add Sheila Jackson Lee and Hank Johnson, Jr., to the list of candidates for "Dumbest Politician in the History of the Universe."

Can you believe these people actually got elected?

  • Putting A Potential Jump In Dividend Taxes Into Perspective [View article]
    Huh?

Have you stopped to consider the economic impact of NOT being able to have those dinners out twice per week, or that $5000 vacation each year?

Take your personal situation and multiply it by the millions of people who will similarly not go out to dinner, take a vacation, or (heaven forbid) make investments in businesses, and see what you end up with.

Being "comfortable" with paying more taxes to the political elite that created this mess in the first place is just plain nutty.

  • Less Smoking: The Biggest Long-Term Risk To Altria [View article]
Per the Gallup poll cited in the article, 68% of smokers claim to be addicted to tobacco and unable to stop. I think MO will be around a while longer, absent a government ban. I'm not a smoker or tobacco user. But the continuing loss of our freedom of choice and personal liberties is very, very troubling.

  • Frontier Communications: Are Dividend Cuts A Thing Of The Past? [View article]
Well, David, it's nice to see you looking at the FCF payout ratio based on traditional metrics as opposed to the non-GAAP methods used by FTR (per our exchange last November).

    Thanks for a good review.
