Standard reply to someone who asks you to look at the big picture: imply he is an insane survivalist. It is interesting that loon interpretted this article as being right-biased, and David interpretted it as left-biased.

  • Is There Any Hope For Solar Stocks?  [View article]
Try GTAT: profitable on its own, order backlog of two years, and expanding into LED's. Nothing but good news and cheap valuation, but getting punished with the whole sector.

GTAT is my current largest holding, because I keep buying as the price moves in an irrational direction. I have offset my longs with puts, so I hope to profit from the puts and when the stock comes back to a rational P/E. GTAT is a "magic formula" top stock.

  • Why I Love GameStop and Think You Should Too  [View article]
GME is (and has been for a long time, since it is such a non-mover) a magic formula stock. I was long but I am convinced that there are some real concerns with the long term outlook, mostly the digital download arena. I once had an xbox 360, and have steam for PC, both of which download games quickly, easily, and cheaper than gamestop. I understand that GME is now making the first moves to get into download market, but they are very late to the party. It may be fundamentally undervalued, but there is nothing that will make the street realize it. My 2 cents.

Well writtten article, as always, but why stray from magic formula stocks? Once you eliminate the undervalued due to poorly run businesses, they are so reliable. I have tried other methods, but I keep coming back to it; I get the best results from magic formula stocks that have good technical indicators. e.g. TER, NOC, MSFT, GILD, MRVL, SOLR, etc.

I use Joel Greenblatt's formula for determining value. COH is undervalued that way. I did exit my long call position today because I think a pullback is due and wanted to book my profit.

  • Goldman, JPMorgan and other securities firms are snapping up warehouse operators to take advantage of the big profit opportunities in holding metals. Warehousers collect a holding fee and can charge a premium on large corporate orders, but critics worry firms will exploit their trading knowledge.   [View news story]
I'd say the main point of this move is to have more knowledge to exploit, not charging a holding fee. It has already been shown on BBC that the large banks instigated the recent rally in copper by creating artificial supply constraints while warehouses were full of copper.

I love it. Every article under "short ideas" gets repsonses from posters who obviously created their account just to respond to the article. The all caps craziness just enhances the funny!

I always become cautious when a large bank's analysts raise a price target on a stock that I am long. It shows the beginning of the largest pump and dump scheme around. I ride the mo' up but with stops at about 1.5 x a days average trading range.
