  • LeapFrog's New Products Are Not Helping Them [View article]
I agree, this article is without any substance.

If you ever stop in a Toys R US, you'll find Leapfrog has outdone themselves on the isle display for the LeapTV, just great in-store advertising utilizing an interactive screen which makes some noise to grab your attention. Feedback from store associates indicates LeapTV is selling, maybe not a bestseller but I generally hear positive comments about the console itself. That said, one negative I do hear is that games are expensive and WiiU or even previous generation Wii are viable alternatives if you're a parent not particularly concerned about the educational aspect of the product. Unfortunately, the channel check is based off a tiny sample size, so take this with a grain of salt. LeapFrog has always been and always will be a niche product.

What I can say with confidence is the child tablet category is highly crowded and the Kindle Fire which now has Kid Mode is dominating. Toys R Us has an entire isle of tablets surrounding the video game area and LeapFrog has very little shelf space in this crowded place. Instead, LeapPad's are stocked mostly with the rest of the LeapFrog merch. LeapPad3 is already being discounted and my perception is that the inventory issue is behind the company as LeapPad3, 2 and Ultra looked to be in short supply on the shelves and at this point there is practically no hope stores will restock in time for the rest of the holiday season unless the product was already en route or in warehouse.

In conclusion, LeapTV may not be the blockbuster 2014 Christmas product some may have been expecting. Look back to the original LeapPad, which was hugely successful, but took time to build awareness. The cadence of LeapTV could follow a similar S type curve, so don't write the product off immediately. Be confident LeapFrog has a large pile of cash, trades substantially below book value with several insiders including top execs having stepped up and made open market purchases of adequate size. More downside potential if this upcoming quarter disappoints already low expectations, but that may be the inflection point for the shorts to cover on the way down as the story will largely have been played out.

Frank, have your views changed now that the price has been cut in half since your original post and the company has refrained from acquiring more companies?

Whopper, do have any information on who these prospective buyers are and how/who appraised the $189 value? A colleague of mine is concerned the character of management is shady and the LOI announcement seemed to him as if the buyers were phantoms. Any thoughts?

looking for the June 5 2012 call, but I only see Aug 6 12' call and a May 1 12' call and the Aug call gives few details on how this transfer will affect earnings power for the remaining company, like Dance Pants is concerned about. Am I missing something here?
