3 segments of BYD in the first half 2012:

1. Automobile business: being Affected by macroeconomic slowdown and overall declined market share of domestic brands, increase the competition in domestic market. BYD actually are shifting the product mix to medium and high-end markets. The company reported that by enhancing the quality of the products, the near-term cost is increasing. In addition, BYD is receiving support from the Chinese government. It will have the advantage in the market of domestic urban public transport. It mentioned in the report: "The increase in the Group’s commitment to the quality of its products may lead to increase in cost in the near-term but, in the long run, is conducive to the enhancement of the Group’s automobile products’ competitiveness and the reputation of its automobile’s brand, thus ensuring the continuing growth of the Group’s automobile business in the long term."

2. Handset component and assembly business: First half of 2012 reflected the decline in sales of a major customer. The major customer has transformed the business from manufacturing handset to smart phones. However, the firm has acquired other emerging intelligent terminal customers.

3. Rechargeable battery: The lithium-ion battery models has actually recognized sales growth during the period, but only nickel batteries segment has the decline in sales. The solar photovoltaic market suffered from the supply-demand imbalance. BYD expected that with the rebounded demand and gradual clear of inventories, the price of solar photovolatic will be stablized.

The most important thing that Buffett and Munger stressed is the quality of the management. And it might last for months, or several years. As it involves with the overall economic and industry outlook, it's hard to predict when, but if the management is great, then the management can push forward the company. Look at Apple since Steve Jobs came back, and IBM on the verge of bankruptcy, then Lou Gertsner came to IBM in 1993 to turn things around.

Wang ChuanFu is holding a significant stake in BYD.
