Microsoft To Apple: 'Welcome To The Club' [View article]
@appl believer - My opinion is that their cash in the bank is a much bigger asset than their products going forward due to rising competition, they have enormous cash in offshore banks, unbelievable. How will they deliver that cash to their share holders. I wonder what would be a good price to buy AAPL at, I was expecting it to go to $350, but it turned around.

You can see reviews by analysts. Also you can see at Amazon, but be aware of fan boys reviews who never held a Nokia phone in their hands. I have seen Amazon mark some reviews with something like "verified buyer", I would definitely rely on those.
Same applies with Microsoft's Surface tablet, I was really surprised to see the reviews favoring Surface over iPad. I did play with iPad, and Surface, but do not own any smart phones yet. I might buy a Surface tablet if the price comes down, and Windows phone, only because they all work together with PCs at home and at work which is windows based enterprise. I need not learn multiple OSs and they all sync up, and talk to each other.
Nokia is releasing a high end phone thru Verizon, comparable in price to iPhone. Nokia phones sold out in some places in the past, and in some countries. Apple was the only solution for a few years, now there are others just as good or even better for lower cost.
Just so that you know, I do own APPL, MSFT, INTC, NOK directly or indirectly.

Reviews say Nokia's Windows phone of similarly prized is much better than iPhone. Apple's iPhone, iPad were the kings, but now there are others to compete with, not so easy.
Intel Can Give Apple The Edge In Mobile [View article]
@ptmmac - "The problem with the spreadsheet is it did not include how important Mobile was going to be as an ongoing part of technology. "
This was only a few years ago, lot of people in tech field knew mobile will be big, it is not something that came out of blue. Qualcom and many analysts knew back in 1990s. Intel also sold one company, I think it was XSCALE.
The problem seems to be the decision was made with gut, instead of questioning the spread sheet data also. Whichever way the decision was made, it was a huge mistake, perhaps Intel will never recover from it, it remains to be seen, I hope they do recover. Engineers and Scientists make decisions based on data, and also question the data very much; they don't use guts, they use minds, otherwise dams and the like will collapse killing tens of thousands to even millions.
The other thing is why is this news coming out now so late.

Ballmer, like Otellini increased revenue, only because of their business models at that time and the state of the company their predecessors left for them. What state are Ballmer & Otellini leaving their companies for the future. Both made same huge mistakes, both had lost decades, if their new mobile catchup solutions do not work, revenues will decline as time goes on, and it will show up on the watch of future CEOs of these companies. Otellini just revealed his huge mistage with Apple (not sure why he kept it as a secret till days before his departure), he passed over when Apple came to Intel's door steps asking for a chip for their cell phone in 2007. That was just few years ago, and at that time, everyone knew Intel needs to get into mobile in a major way. And Apple was highly successful with other products they made just prior to iPhone, like with iPod etc.
Between the two CEOs, it looks like Ballmer did a better job in diversifying Microsoft, although I would need to do more research to see if it is because of Ballmer or because of Gates left the company positioned that way and Gates is still in the background. Gates seems to be a genius, he is remarkably successful with his philanthropy venture as well, he is trying to eradicate Polio from this planet, and helping the poor of the world with healthcare.
And there is Cisco, every one says CEO Chambers had done a great job, although stock has not moved much over the last 10+ years just like MSFT & INTEL; it has recent pop, but no where near the peak it was at in the past. Between these 3 CEOs, rarely you will hear negative comments about the way Cisco is run by Chambers, you hear plenty of negative comment about Otellini & Ballmer. Chambers has and continue to change the company into a IT company, instead of just a network company. Besides MSFT, Cisco holds billions in offshore accounts. Cisco was very late to the dividend party, and Chambers made himself quiet wealthy while the stock languished, he could have at least started dividends long ago and bring it to the level of 4-5%.
Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund (VWINX), A Fund For Everyone [View instapost]
That's a good article about Wellesley fund. Since stocks have been rising, this fund is lagging, due to bond prices falling. When compared with Wellington, Wellesley (6.66%) has gained close to half as much as Wellington (12.01%). When rates rise, it will affect stocks too, may be not as much as bonds.
If you look at long term returns on this fund, after a rare negative year(s), the following year it gains big.
"Wiener, the newsletter editor, said in the next five years, Vanguard Wellington, with its greater allocation to stocks, is a better bet than Vanguard Wellesley." I wonder if either moving from Wellesley to Wellington or any new contributions to Wellington instead of Wellesley is a good idea.

Only for Otellini hind sight is 20-20, because he is lacking engineering or scientific background, and of course has no PhD or patents to his name in such fields. How in the world did he get a CEO job for such a high tech company. He was thinking like a salesman, not as someone with deep tech background, with a vision that does not exist yet. Wrong person to be a CEO for a tech company, Intel missed billions due to this mistake, and has fallen behind. Does Intel have a chip solution for wearable devices? don't think so, never heard of it. It will be a huge hit, bigger than cell phones or tablets in terms of volume. During 80s IBM made the same mistake with Mainframes vs PC, as Intel did with PC vs Mobile, sales and marketing people were looking at million dollar numbers for mainframes and peanuts for PCs. History repeats, with different actors.
Intel Won't Build Apple's Chips; It Still Makes No Sense [View article]
Yes, it costs investors and Intel many billions, due to his mistake. The question is why is he telling us now, just week(s) before his departure, this never came out in the news over the years.
He has no engineering or scientific background, this is what happens when they put people with finance, marketing, sales, liberal arts, law background people into leadership positions in tech companies. They lack tech vision due to mismatching skills.

Yes, had Otellini did not pass over when Apple came to him for their iPhone chip before it was known to the world, Apple would have pushed Intel into cutting edge mobile architecture. Otellini made a huge mistake, only now we are coming to know what happened. It is is similar to the mistake IBM made with PCs and Mainframes during 80s.

Recently exiting Intel CEO Otellini just revealed that he made a big mistake, and passed over when Apple came to Intel for a chip for it's yet to be released phone, not realizing what a success it would be, now we know that phone as iPhone.
If it happened before, may be they will come back.

Microsoft is supporting Nokia. Can Nokia switch to new Intel chips, it makes Windows 8 phones. Although Nokia lost it's leadership in cell phones, it is one way for Intel to gain at least some market share.
