I started my original reply like your first sentence but tried (successfully this time) to restrain myself. Completely understand your incredulity!
Hard core proponents of the EU like to justify their ideology by claiming it promotes greater democracy, greater stability, greater fairness, greater freedom, greater prosperity - and yet with every passing month their very claims are blatantly refuted by actual reality unfolding before our very eyes.
The only thing the EU does is concentrate and centralise the power to control (i.e. mess up) more and more lives across many contries at the same time, into the hands of relatively fewer elite politicians. How anyone believes that can be good, either economically, or in any other sphere, is beyond me.
That comment is a great example of what jhooper talks about above - "the insult tactic". It says more about the prejudices of the one who wrote it than about the actual topic of discussion. It is another way of saying "You are just a low brow, 19th century troglodite".
When you have no logical argument, your only tactic is to try and embarrass or shame others into giving up theirs.
If you listened to Glen Beck you might learn something.
I agree with your thesis entirely and this is one of the biggest headwinds for gold.
Your question "What happens when Europe becomes more stable?" is so far beyond the horizon it's not worth asking it yet. In the meantime the dollar looks far better than it deserves to, which weighs on gold prices.
But despite that, fundamentals for gold have never looked better (especially now we know who the president is).

Great video clips, Farage is a hero.
Sadly his country does not appreciate him. Perhaps like Churchill before WW2, when nobody wanted to believe his warnings until it was too late.
The foe still comes from the continent, only this time its weapons are not guns and tanks, but regulations and treaties bringing political and economic bondage.
"I want to have a strong UK in the EU, let me make that absolutely clear," Merkel told European lawmakers"
That is a contradiction Ms Merkel. If she was really concerned about the strength of the UK, she would let it leave the EU. Instead she and her European masters want endless bailout commitments from the UK taxpayer to prop up their failing euro currency and banking system.
"I cannot imagine that the UK would not be part of Europe," Merkel retorted, recalling Britain's role in ending Nazi rule in Germany in 1945."
Oh please! The Nazi's attempted to take over Europe, subjugating nations' democracies, their economies, and their sovereignty by force of arms. The European elite are trying to achieve exactly the same thing, except without a shot being fired. At least Hitler was more honest about what he was doing!
On the recent news of the US election result, I thought one of the quotes should be selected which seems most pertinent to the occasion. I couldn't choose between these two, so I put them both:
1. "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried."
2. "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy."
....And on seeing some of the voters celebrating and being interviewed by US news broadcasters:
"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
The election result only proves Romney's point. By making his 47% statement, he was not the one introducing the "them" and "us" problem, which is what democrats/socialists everywhere love to pretend.
Romney was simply making an observation that it already existed, was working against him, and therefore affected how he focussed effort in his campaign.
Anyone who thinks Obama did not make such strategic decisions in his campaign, and that somehow would make him a better person or president, is simply an idiot.
Of course, nothing is ever said about the low life scum who took the video secretly and then sold it for personal gain to the low life media, knowing it would be shown endlessly, re-interpretted and taken out of context. A person of no integrity or character whatsoever.

I bought more SLW earlier this week at around $38.xx. Difficult to see how this can not do well in the longer term.

Good article, the analysis makes a lot of sense, whether or not your favoured outcome is the one which actually transpires.
