  • Where Investors Need To Be Looking In The Coal Sector Right Now [View article]
There appears to be a rise again in black lung disease. This could be major trouble for any companies with significant underground production. I haven't researched which companies, but must include a lot of Appalachian production.

  • Fukushima, Climate Change And Stocks To Watch [View article]
Dr Leeb is correct in stating the topic of global warming has been highly politicized by people and groups on both sides of the issue. Science is often a casualty in the ideology and emotions of politics, and distortion and ignorance of the facts are inevitable.
Most people lack the scientific background to understand the complexities of climate science, including just about everyone in the media, mainstream and otherwise. There are some excellent blogs and websites, but it's difficult for the average person to identify these from those with a political agenda. But most SA readers are pretty intelligent, and I think you know how to inform yourselves if you're really interested. Hint: start with the National Academy of Science.

There's a pipeline going right to it, coming in from the west. Also, there is a major pipeline about 1/4 mile to the south.

There are pipelines all over the place. You can see ground disturbance and clear cutting through the trees. At the next pad to the west, you can see the pipelines. If you go a little to the east, you can see a pad with the drill rig and equipment.
As for platforms, I've never seen a producing oil or gas well with a platform.

  • 4 Undervalued Mining Stocks To Buy With BHP Billiton Now [View article]
BHP has a bit of a complicated share structure because it is a merger of an Australian company - Broken Hill Proprietary - and an Anglo-Dutch company - Billiton, which was owned by Royal Dutch Shell. So it is listed in London as BLT.L and Australia as BHP.AX. Both are traded on NYSE as ADRs under BBL and BHP respectively.

  • What's Next For Undervalued Coal Stocks? [View article]
One needs to understand the meaning of "reserves". The US has had less than 10 years of natural gas reserves for several decades now because many NG companies don't spend the money to "prove" their reserves that they know are there based on historic production data. Likewise with coal. Coal beds show lateral continuity over great distances, and it is not always worth the money to prove their reserve status.

  • Is The Powder River Basin The Next Central Appalachia? Peabody, Arch And Cloud Peak Hope Not [View article]
    Mark,
Are you saying that it's cheaper to move coal by unit train than NG by pipeline? That's not intuitive to me.

    Thanks ding,
The Marcellus could shut in much of CAPP, unless fracing gets tied up in environmental regs.

  • Alliance Resource Partners: Safe 7.5% Yield With Significant Unit Price Upside [View article]
If you look at stats like PE PS PB ROE etc, ARLP looks better. But stock performance is pretty similar over the past 5 years, although AHGP is a little better over the last year (-16% vs -25%). ARLP has a higher distribution, but AHGP has a higher distribution growth rate, 44% vs 14% over the past 5 years. As the GP, AHGP will continue to grow distribution faster than ARLP. That's probably why AHGP has a higher PE and lower yield. I don't know if there are different tax considerations.
I guess I don't see a significant difference. Comments anyone?

Peter, you have presented an interesting thesis that Ill Basin might be better than PRB. Like all low value commodities, the economics of coal is very dependent on transportation costs, and Ill Basin does seem have an edge over PRB for export market. There has been a lot of talk about exporting PRB coal to Asia, but, living in the Pacific NW, I can tell you that there is a lot of opposition from environmentalists toward building coal export terminals. If it happens, it is many years and lawsuits down the road. That's why I won't invest in CLD.
    Thanks.

The problem with STO is that the Norwegian government owns 67%, and government interest don't always align with those of stockholders. PBR has the same problem, only more so.

  • Yamana's Post-Acquisition Bounce Shows The Way To Value In Gold Miners [View article]
Because Cerro Moro is located in Argentina, AUY got a bargain on XG. That is why I don't think this is a good meter stick for valuing other juniors. The main problem that I see in Argentina is not expropriation, but rather currency controls - it may be difficult to move profits out of the country. Which may be why AUY bot XG - it gives them a place to invest cash flow from their other Argentine operations.
