  • CLSA's GTAT downgrade focuses on yields/margins; GLW higher [View news story]
"Anyone notice that GTAT is not an American company ..." The comany is based in Merrimack, NH, my home town, started by a local. And you say it is not American? And your source for this "fact?"

What's missing in the analysis of the cost of sapphire coverplate for the iPhone6 is the cost of the protective cover. If sapphire is that much stronger than gorilla glass and almost unbreakable, the additional protection, costing about $15, is not required. This will lessen the price increase.

Thinking that suppliers are struggling with yields is different than knowing. Stating this belief as fact when it is speculation is not appropriate in light of the wide swing of millions of dollars. I guess if you have a good story that someone will believe, caveat emptor.

  • CLSA slashes GT Advanced forecasts on low sapphire yields [View news story]
His basis seems all speculation with out any hard facts. And his earnings estimate is off the wall in left field.

  • Double Top For Apple? [View article]
Too many bullish readers. Who's left to buy? Just my contrarian bent. Could be a big drop after 9/9, buy the rumor, sell the news. After APPL consolidates lower, I may buy some more for the L/T.

  • A Breakdown Of Apple's ROE Tells A Cautionary Tale [View article]
Apple will float some more debt to increase its dividend. What Apple pays in interest (a business expense) is much less than using cash left in foreign subsidiaries and paying income taxes on it. This hits some of your points to increase ROE but the reasons for doing it do not fall nicely into the ROE formula, regular of duPont. To analyze Apple, you must think outside the box or formula. IMHO

  • Apple: Q2 Results Are Not What They Seem [View article]
How Apple recognizes revenue is nothing new and has been going on for years. Or are suggesting that there has been an accounting change? Such a change would require IRS approval.

  • Are You Really Ready To Retire? [View article]
Timitybauer, the information is not inaccurate since it is based on my work as a government employee in the FAA. CSRS ended in 1984 and FERS started. FERS is a small portion defined benefit plan (CSRS), social security and TSP (optional). Retirement age is the same as for Social Security.
Since I worked for the FAA starting in 1970, I am under the CSRS. I contributed to my pension all my career at the rate of 7%, more than the Social Security deduction, which was lower and gradually rose to the current 4.2%.
Which government plan are you under, FERS or ... ?

  • Are You Really Ready To Retire? [View article]
Moon, government pensions (defined benefit plans) ended in 1984. Now, government employees contribute to Social Security just like you and I and into the Thrift Savings Plan, a 401(k) defined contribution plan. I think your remarks are off-base.

  • Here's Why I've Changed My Tune And Decided To Go Long On Shares Of Annaly Capital [View article]
Heather, you must have an interesting, complex and expensive federal tax return and multi-state returns each year. I hope the divvies cover the costs and headaches. Any thoughts on converting to ETFs or ETNs to get the same results with less paperwork?

  • Annaly: No One Is Talking About Insider Buying, But They Should Be [View article]
CoinsK, for a gold dealer, that would be a business loss. For an investor, that would be a capital loss. On the flip side, gold is considered a collectible and any gains are taxed at 28% on Schedule D.

Not option exercise but outright purchases. The best option that insiders hold has an exercise price in the mid-13s.

  • H&R Block - How Well Will It Do In 2014? [View article]
TurboTax's advertising "no tax knowledge needed" should give you the willies, not its competition "potential." H&R Block's campaign "get your billion back" is based on the results of the self filings of the above campaign.

Smurf, not a good comparison since Volker was trying to kill inflation with an interest rate as high as 22%. Right now, there is no inflation so any rate increase is totally market driven, not Fed driven. The market will not make rates go so high as to stop the nascent recovery and squash the bull market. It is not that masochistic or stupid!

@RS, in your first graph, comparing the price of NLY with the ten year treasury rate, you said that the price dropped when the rate hit 3%. That is incorrect. NLY was "up" that day by 1 cent, taking into account that it was exd of .30 that day.

Can't wait to read your next article when you get bullish on NLY again.

    Happy New Year to all!
