  • I'm Increasing Apple To 30% Of My 2015 Portfolio [View article]
Dear Alcaraz, I have been disproportionately overweight in Apple for 10 years. It's the one stock I make this sort of exception for. I take profits when it gets absurd relative to the rest of my portfolio. I'm ok with this approach. Everyone has to make their own decisions about their investments. There's no need to criticize another investor's style or decisions. We've all made good and bad calls and we'll do it again.

I'm curious: what are some other recommendations for your "safe stocks of companies that have a cult-like devotion from their customers"? Thanks.

  • Diamond Foods: The Good, The Not Bad, And The Not Too Ugly [View article]
Thanks so much for the review and assessment. I feel like I can skip reading the quarterly call because of the great overview you've provided. I think Diamond has so much potential. As they recover from the mis-steps of the past, they seem to be emerging stronger. I do agree, that debt is a big hangover. Time will tell.

Always happy when a smart pro opens my eyes to how the information was there to see. It was actionable back in April, several months before the Street caught on. Very smart. Thank you.

  • General Electric Is Rising From The Ashes [View article]
Ya know what? I'm going to get out of my position in GE. I bought in 11 months ago after reading SA bull after SA bull expound on what great opportunities were ahead for GE. My position sank 10% before coming back to even this week. I'm not going to look back, regardless of what happens, although I do hope that all investors are made whole or better yet, reap great reward. I don't need to be anywhere where absolutely nothing is happening. And where commenters uniformly call for the CEO to be out and the Board reconstituted.

I do love this past year's GE commercials on TV. They're innovative and brilliant. Maybe GE's ad agency should step in for the Board.

  • Apple Approaches Price Target Too Quickly [View article]
Hi TF. I am also over concentrated AAPL, and plan to begin taking profits. I've just started placing some collar option trades on portions of my holdings. The collar protects me to the downside and I'm prepared to have the shares I want to sell called away to the upside if it gets there, and I'm safe in the middle. Plus, I've been able to make a little premium. Seems like a safe way to play this situation.

It's hard to sell in such a positive dynamic as we've got. But discipline wins out in the long run.

Trader Joe's is owned by Germany's Albrecht family. So, technically it would be a sale, or a spin-off, if it ever happened.

Thanks to the author for a good article on WFM. It may be "fairly valued" here, but I've got money on it that it goes higher.

  • Chicago Bridge & Iron: Temporary Negative Cash Flow Leads To Golden Opportunity [View article]
100: Thanks for your response! I'm ok w. a company using its cash to pay down debt and repurchase shares, as these actions lead to a better bottom line for them and (usually) a better share price for the investors. I bought CBI for growth, not the dividend. Since I neglected to set a stop and rode my profits down the roller coaster, I'm here in my seat for the ride back up.

Thanks for the updates on the short position and analysis of the company. Maybe I will buy more at these levels, to bring my cost basis down. One thing I'm not pleased with is the dividend. It's so small. What do you think might cause the company to consider raising its dividend?

Thank you. You've given me just the detailed look into DMND that I've been hoping for. I've been interested to know if DMND could be a good takeover candidate, but with that amount of debt on the books, it doesn't seem likely. I've held the stock through the good times and bad. I'm tempted to bid adieu, but now there's the prospect of new products coming from the Innovation Center, and the stock has been acting well, lately.

  • Apple Has Its Mojo Back [View article]
I watched the after hours stock price yesterday as Apple reported. I was amazed to see it head down toward $98 before flattening out and then eventually creeping up a dollar or so. I was frustrated and disappointed that the market can't "see the forest for the trees" when it comes to AAPL. I thought about my reaction overnight. I realize that I, like other longtime investors in AAPL, probably got jaded by that meteoric rise during 2010- Sept. 2012. The slightest good news sent the shares up $10-20 in a single session, day after day. We all know how that ended. (There were also fewer shares in the market then, by 1/7.)

Overnight, I concluded that the new trading dna of AAPL is better. It is more sane, less prone to exuberance, and therefore, more stable. The analysts are still playing their silly numbers games; I guess that's how they stay employed. I'll take my long term view over theirs, and enjoy the steady growth that AAPL has contributed to my portfolio over the decades I've held it. (Bought my first shares at $17 when SJ was being taken to the woodshed, again. :-)

Surplus: I thought about asking you why you insist on badgering the author about taking a position. But then I read your profile and decided you are a jerk and not worth my time.

Thanks, Siddhartha, for spending your valuable time and humbly providing an analytical approach to results this quarter. This is a challenging time in the market. May we all proceed cautiously and wisely.
