Wow! I had to scroll back to the top to see if I was still on Seeking Alpha's website. Thought I accidentally went to iHub or StockTwits or some other nauseating site where "investors" act as bull or bear salesmen:)

My apologies alesmith. I do know the difference between hedging and averaging down ... i was just trying to be clever. I guess it didn't work!:) Haha! Take care.

I think it's cool to use strategies like the ones you suggest. Especially for more of the trader types. I am more of an investor who buys great companies at low prices, and then hedge by buying those same companies at even lower prices. I suck at bottoms and tops, so I have personal rules that I follow when to buy more to "hedge" my positions, as long as the company meets my fundamental criteria. Even at 32 years old, I'm kinda old school like that:)
Where was this story 50% ago? Its cover showing a tombstone engraved "R.I.P. PC," Barron's says DELL and H-P (HPQ) will fade from view. Next up for trouble could be Microsoft (MSFT), seemingly cheap at 9X 2013 earnings, but which reported sales at its Windows unit off by a third Y/Y after backing out pre-sales for Windows 8. The world awaits the launch of Surface at midnight on Friday. More winners/losers here. [View news story]
I guarantee Barron's does not create anything they put out on a tablet. Eventually the transformation of desktops/laptops will be drastic ... But for now, the thought of doing any kind of serious, in depth work on a tablet, is daunting to say the least.
Hey Robert ... while I absolutely respect where you are coming from, especially with your background, I trust my own instinct. I've only been investing for a handful of years. There have been many times that if I would have trusted my own studies/instinct/mind, I would have been better off. And I was listening to others who also had impressive backgrounds ... financial advisors/analysts. I got caught up in the "noise." Please don't take that as disrespect to you. I really don't mean it that way. But, since I have learned to turn off the noise and trust myself I have done much better. That doesn't mean I don't value input from other investors. I just trust my own stock studies and my own decisions.
I am a buy and observe investor. MSFT is financially healthy. And in some people's opinions, despite current leadership. Does the release of Windows 8 have me concerned? Well, yeah! Just like waking up everyday wondering if the next big worldwide event will tank my oil stocks. But, I see enough potential that I'm willing to risk it.
I don't know your true intentions ... you seem like an upright guy to me by your bio. If you are really looking out for me (and others) I sincerely thank you. But, I'll keep following my own plan ... and I hope that includes me making money with MSFT;)
Being in the market in general is a risk to one's equity. Apple's iPhone sales could fall 20% causing a mass selloff considering it makes up 50%+ in sales. Geez, I would hate to be in that stock. Coca Cola could lose 40% in a blink because a whistleblower squeals that the CEO poops in every batch of Coke Zero. Geez, I would hate to be in that stock. The EU could forget how capitalism works ... ;) ... Geez, I would hate to be in those stocks. I'm just messing with ya a lil but the fact is nobody really knows what a company may or may not do. It's investing. There are risks and rewards. Windows 8 could blow or blow away. We won't know until next quarter. Just my thought.
More on Bernstein's downgrade of Intel (INTC): Analyst Stacey Rasgon actually thinks Intel's Q4 results will be above consensus. But he's worried the company, which badly wants to bring ultrabook prices down, will see a mix shift towards cheaper Core i3 notebook CPUs relative to costlier i5 and i7 parts, reversing a recent trend towards stronger i5 sales. Rasgon expects Intel's notebook CPU ASP to fall to $88.84 in 2013 from $94.17 in 2012. [View news story]

The best, most levelheaded analysis here is from all the commenters and not from the so called professional analyst. I was telling my wife about these "analysts" and their downgrades and even she, who doesn't do anything with investing, said "are they idiots? Intel isn't leaving anytime soon." Gosh, she's beautiful and brilliant;) So, while the scared are selling I find it a great time to buy. Investors really need to think about the motives of these analysts. If they really cared about your money they would have cautioned around $28-29, not at $22-23.

Big data is where it's at, I think. Let the other tech companies focus on the glam devices, while Intel creates the servers that quietly run in the shadows ... and rake in the $$$!

If companies shifted their business models as often as the sentiment of "analysts" swayed with the wind, every company to ever exist would be bankrupt:) Geez, I can't stand analysts and their useless drivel. As far as the article and the comments here ... Very nice, level-headed assessments.

by the way - I'm an extreme Apple fan and user and I think Microsoft has created something cool. That's why I went long MSFT, for the record.
