  • Putin: Russia to aid Syria if attacked [View news story]
What a ridiculous mess. I don't happen to think the USA needs to do anything. Leave this Syrian civil war thing alone. When the day comes we need to defend our reputation because AMERICANS are involved somewhere, then fine... Get out the weed burners and clean some serious ass - but this does not qualify as involving Americans. Leave it alone. Lets watch them fight their own battle. They have only been behaving this way for about 3000 years. Does anyone seriously think we can "fix" this???? Are you kidding me????

  • Wendy's (WEN +0.4%) introduction of its pretzel cheeseburger may have something to do with McDonald's (MCD -2.6%) tepid July outlook, says Janney's Mark Kalinowski who had downgraded the stock ahead of this morning's earnings. The restaurant industry as a whole is facing pressure, says RayJay's Bryan Elliot who recently downgraded a number of names in the sector. A cautious endorsement comes from S&P Capital IQ which reiterates its Buy, but is seeing "increased competition for consumers who are seeking value." Other names today: (JACK -1.2%), (YUM -0.9%). [View news story]
"Tepid" could be a problem as MCD keeps experimenting with their "new innovating choices". People don't want organic gluten free arugula wraps at McDonalds. People want simple fast hamburgers and french fries. It might be time to get back to basics again.

  • Ford Rated Strong Buy With 29% Upside [View article]
As always, depends on your time horizon.

I just see the fundamental pent up demand for new cars and trucks continuing to slowly increase. With the average age of vehicles on the road becoming older and older, two things are clear. Vehicles themselves are better and consumers are much more informed. The last 5 years have been brutal for all the auto makers.

With Alan Mulally at the helm, Ford is as competitive as anybody. And the kicker is, I believe once again, they are building cars and trucks that people actually want again, pretty much as simple as that.

    One other "comparison":

Jobs/Apple: Market Cap: $400 B with profit margin of 27%

    Musk/Tesla: $15.5 B and -96%

    Yeah...I see what you mean.

  • Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) is obligated to buy a whopping $23.5B worth of iPhones from Apple (AAPL) this year, about twice as many as it sold in 2012, thinks former Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett after going over SEC filings (Vodafone's 20-F appears to be the source). Moffett estimates Verizon, which he believes has fallen short of its iPhone purchase commitments each year since it began selling the phone in 2011, could end up owing Apple $12B-$14B at year's end, given sales trends. Moffett: "It isn’t clear that Apple has any incentive to blow up [its Verizon] relationship by taking a hard line ... Still, it is likely that Apple would be reluctant to simply ignore these commitments." (Sprint[View news story]
All depends on reactions to the 5S (or 6 or whatever). A vast majority of the 4S's were sold 2 years ago (remember?). Those 2 year contracts expire this fall.

  • Many Will Not Retire; What About You? [View article]
I am one of the chunks circling the bowl as you write. My decision to retire soon has been made precisely because it is, after all, an opportunity to NOT "work until I die". I consider myself very fortunate indeed. That said, I still believe there are more opportunities than ever before for today's youngsters, and I agree - having a plan, staying flexible, and making it a success is absolutely essential.

  • Tesla: A Curious Convergence Of Opportunity To Petition For A Stock Break Out [View article]
Fun (and informative) reading the comments. Very enjoyable seeing the different viewpoints. Its all good Julian.

There is no chance of a signature drive accomplishing anything. Especially with respect to political realities of today's federal government. Sorry to be negative, but this is my opinion. But just in case, lets say the drive is successful...

This stock may have taken off like a "rocket ship", but just about everything that goes up, comes back down. This Model S is no doubt a wonderful machine. However, until they become competitive price wise with other mass market transportation appliances, the average working wage earner is simply going to pass. Tesla will definitely sell a few, yes. Ford sold 200,000 vehicles last month alone. Who bought them? Common ordinary everyday working people. This concept was the basis of Henry's vision. (I'm not saying F is better - my point is that TSLA's market is too narrow.)

Everyone WANTS a Tesla, but only a small proportion of the population can realistically afford one. (Most folks don't do future value calculations with their day to day expenses or even begin thinking about the price of gas in x years.) Indeed, many live pay check to pay check.

After all this magnetostatically controlled dingle arm battery swapping noise dies away and all the talk about a super ion capacitive fluffy charger network calms down - sentiment will change and we will return to reality. Again, just my opinion. I am more than happy to change my mind, I just can't right now. (Actually I would LOVE to change my mind about this.)

This won't be the first time I may turn out to be the village idiot, but something about this company and the stock price just doesn't ring.

I don't know, but I've "heard" one of those big three never had any "account" to settle with the US taxpayer in the first place. Try again.
