Bright Nights for IMAX and the Dark Knight [view article]
Just to clarify, the article was originally written here wcpowertechfund.blogsp... on July 7th, with IMAX hovering in the $6.30s.While the 5% move upwards, even during the market's recent sell-off has been welcomed, I still see some upside past $7 when the momentum of opening weekend results arrive for The Dark Knight.

Bright Nights for IMAX and the Dark Knight [view article]
Richie,I've made the comment that "And yes, studios have released movies on IMAX screens before, why is this different?" within the article to specifically address that point.
Movies have been blown up to be shown on the IMAX screen before, some very successfully, but never has a big commercial movie filmed sequences with IMAX cameras. This is a big deal.
Furthermore, the movie's premier on July 14th will be at an IMAX theatre, saying to the movie that this film needs to be seen the way it was intended.
IMAX also just sent out a press release that this is the biggest pre-order ticket seller for the theatre chain ever, and it will be released on a record 94 screens domestically and another 15 internationally. All-time high numbers for showings of a single film.
I'd say that's different than the previously re-made Superman film.

Is Anything Worth Owning in the Auto Industry? [view article]
Gearhead, just to add to your comment about the Prius sales and how long it stays on the lot.Toyota does things differently then the American auto makers. They do not produce a car until it is actually sold to a dealership. And a dealership obviously doesn't buy a number of cars without a clear rough estimate of typical demand.
While other automakers produce cars all the time, leave them at the plant until they are sold, and when no one buys them they shut the plant down for 2 weeks and send everyone home, Toyota is different. They produce cars that are already sold to dealerships and use overtime to produce any excesses if needed.
There is a reason why Toyota cars dont stay on dealership lots very long. Jul 02 10:03 PM
Is Anything Worth Owning in the Auto Industry? [view article]
Yes, of course I'm aware that Chevy is a part of GM, however, in terms of auto design, each brand is its own house and makes its own bed. Chevy styling simply is staggering bad, but don't get started on those GMC SUVs and large Trucks. Jun 26 02:13 PMApple Earnings Sweet in Sour Economic Times [view article]
You are right from a semantic point of view. What I was illustrating with that statement is the fact that no new iPhone revenue will be counted in the quarter. It is clear, due to Apple's spreading of iPhone sales over 2 years, that all of the previously sold units will provide revenue. Google's tax rate was mentioned in the results as 24%. Only 1% lower than the preceding holiday quarter (25%). The better International Mix has a lot more to do with the earnings beat than a 1% lower tax rate.--

Apple Might Have Fallen Unfairly, but Look Before You Take a Bite [view article]
In the opening paragraph, the unrealisitc expectations and results are meant as part of the Investor stumbling blocks set by the world at large/investing community, not by Apple itself.Hope that clarifies Jan 23 09:45 AM
Apple and Intel Fail to Impress: Waiting for the Fed's Next Move [view article]
Hello all,It is nice to see some discussion come out of this. But I'm a little perplexed at how a "market overview" article has taken such an Apple centric approach. I'm merely commenting on how recessionary fears have taken out the best in technology. I've been an Apple long for a very long time, and have written focused articles on the company many times before.

I know that's a lot to focus on one company but it was and still is the biggest holding of the WC Fund.
I'm not a professional analyst, never claimed to be, I write about markets, things I would be investing in and things I would stay away from. SeekingAlpha has chosen to reprint my articles and I believe that stands for something from a quality perspective.

Oil Hits $100: Time to Look at Transocean [view article]
More over, while RIG is a great long term name for the above mentioned oil supply channel, I'm specifically talking a trade here because I think oil can get a pop higher if it breaches the $100 level for good, and I think its headed there sooner rather than later. Jan 07 07:46 PMOil Hits $100: Time to Look at Transocean [view article]
I've been in and out of Energy related names over the past year or so. I think there's still room here, obviousy $80 turned out to be a great entry point, but at the same time we are at 90+ oil, so the climb in the commodity is what has really brought out the stock price increases. At this point in RIG, I think that even a seasonal oil fall will not hurt RIG's stock as much as it would have in the past since key metrics aren't yet overvalued and the oil game will be fierce and very rich as supplies get even more strapped in 2-5 years time. Universal Music Group Readies DRM-Free Music, Sans iTunes [view article]
I had another quick point to add briefly but I didn't want to make the above comment too too long.I don't think companies should be forced to license anything. You've made a great successful product, and consumers have embraced it. That's the end of that.
Would you also deman that Microsoft for example licensed the Halo games so they can play on PS2 or PS3. No! Because that would completely cannibalize sales of XBox so why would the company do that.
The simple fact of licensing is that it only makes sense to do it if it makes strategic sense for the company.
The way iTunes and iPod work so seemlessly together is one of the main selling points for a lot of consumers so why would Apple want to knock the fence down? Aug 14 12:26 AM
Universal Music Group Readies DRM-Free Music, Sans iTunes [view article]
While you have valid points about Apple licensing their DRM software, I don't think it'll ever happen. The simple solution of DRM free is best, so why would licensing DRM be better?I don't think it's a fair guess that most of the music on iPods is pirated. First off, the biggest capacity iPods also store a lot of video for a lot of people and secondly, I think a majotiry of iPod users used iTunes to digitize their entire CD collections. Another point of contention in the entertainment business model is making consumers pay several times for the same entertainment. It happens in music, movies, tv, almost every form of entertainment. Vinyl, tapes, then cds, now mp3s. In films, theatres, pay per view, and you had VHS, then DVD and now blu-ray or HD-DVD.
When people throw around numbers like 100 million ipods sold and 3 billion songs so only about 30 songs per iPod so the rest of the space must be pirated, they always fail to mention how many people have vast CD libraries that they've burned to MP3 format to put on their iPods. So I feel like that point of piracy is not a strong one without and concrete study facts. Yes there is piracy in the digital world, you have to face that, but at the same time, making a consumer buy the same song or album from the same artists just cause its in a different format is an entirely different form of piracy.
I think this Universal DRM-free test will not fare well simply because those other stores do very little business, so to expect a massive uptick when most digital music consumers are already familiar with iTunes is very optimistic. I think if Universal were to embrace iTunes Plus they would see a much much higher increase in interest in their online music offerings.
Each side has had their faults in negotiations but it seems like Apple fights for the consumer (and of course their bottom line) and Universal fights simply for the bottom line. The way the music industry treats not only consumers but also artists I can't help but feel that them being well behind the curve in digital music is for the better in the long run. The trend of indie labels and bigger bands moving to indie labels has slowly started with this digital revolution and I think you'll see more of it as digital music becomes more and more of a social experience over the internet. Bands won't need massive major label marketing budgets, because word of mouth is your biggest selling point. Now if only the Payola would stop so some of these truly great musical acts can get their songs played on the radio once in a while we'd be living in a beautiful world, musically.

Trouble In Paradise? Goldman's Flagship Alpha Fund Reportedly Down 16% in '07 [view article]
Yes I am long the stock and I believe it will be a strong holding. The reason that I mention that buying opportunities may seem to appear is due to overall market uncertainty. You can recommend the greatest company in the world, but if the markets dives on more subprime fears that effects everything and Goldman is not immune.
I already hold long positions in Goldman but would've been adding if I could in the 190 and last week's 170s brief touch. The fact remains that the market has a strong tendency now to be choppy and will continue that way until there is some light at the end of the tunnel to this credit mess. So as good of a company as Goldman is, it may be under pressure with the rest of the market. But for the longer term I believe these pressure points on the stock present opportunities to own now and hold for the year(s) to come.
