  • Richmond, CA plans litigation against Chevron (CVX) over last year's refinery fire and is reportedly aiming to hire Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy - the same firm which represented San Bruno against PG&E over its gas-line explosion in 2010. No stranger to Chevron, Cotchett Pitre recently filed a class-action suit against the company for defrauding royalty owners. [View news story]

  • Einhorn's Greenlight Wins Injunction Against Apple, Making A March Dividend Increase More Probable [View article]
"Apple argued that it is not breaking any law by grouping the matters up for vote, as all three involved changed the company's articles of incorporation."

This is an embarrassingly weak argument. Should all of the Constitutional Amendments have been combined into one and given a single up-or-down vote?

  • Will 'Audit The Fed' Impact The Price Of Gold? [View article]
Michael -- I made this calculation independently and arrived at a number very close to yours. The difference is probably in the ambiguities of the units (e.g. long (UK) ton vs. metric ton vs. short (US) ton). My result was about $739,000 per ounce.

  • AT&T (T) VP Bob Quinn responds to accusations his company is violating net neutrality rules by limiting Apple's FaceTime to Wi-Fi and shared data plans. AT&T is innocent, Quinn argues, since neutrality rules only apply to downloaded rather than pre-installed apps. Few sympathize. "It's a dangerous, slippery slope to limit smartphone features ... just because a customer doesn't sign up for the most expensive data plan," says Steve Kovach. That might especially be true when rivals are racing to compete on price[View news story]
"neutrality rules only apply to downloaded rather than pre-installed apps"

Since when do the neutrality specifications separate the world into these two parts?

  • Fighting Over Rectangles: Why Apple Can't Win The Patent War [View article]
Perhaps I will patent a circle. Then I can sue all the car manufacturers for infringement on my patent in their design of wheels. Apple should move on with what they know how to do, design and build innovative products and leave this lawyer full-employment project to other, less creative people.

  • AT&T: This Run Has Just Begun [View article]
I was an AT&T landline customer for many years. Suddenly and without notice, the telephone line stopped working and repeated calls to the company failed to resolve the issue. I was never able even to speak with a representative. I tried to switch to U-Verse, but the best Internet service they could provide was a non-competitive 15K bps.

This company is brain-dead with respect to customer service, and I actually don't care how profitable they can get by screwing their customers.

  • Execs with Coca-Cola (KO -0.1%) unload on NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg over his plan to curb soda intake as the elixir for the nation's obesity issues. Headliner Katie Bayne says obesity rose during the last 20 years as beverage intake declined, as she ponders why only a few names are getting singled out? Analyst take: Coca-Cola sales will stay on par, but the blowup could have an impact on the company's plans to boost its fountain business. [View news story]
