  • RIM's Rally Providing Cheap Calls For Bulls [View article]
Missing the holiday season is not the end of the world. There is a new paradigm today, whereby many are getting used to the notion of spending $300 to $$800 per year to replace phones, just for the fun of it. If ( and it is a BIG if), Rimm shows up with a slick new phone that slices, and dices, and beats as it sweeps as it cleans, there is a huge group of buyers that will want to be the first on the block to have it, especially if everyone else on said block is pulling identical iphones out of their pocket.

And then there is the perception that it's nearly impossible to hack a Blackberry. Lots of people have found out the hard way over the past few years that somebody might just be peeking at their phone ipersonals (ahem).

No prediction here... just wouldn't write RIMM off quite yet.

This would have been a meaningful article had it been published a few days ago. Hindsight, 20/20, and all of that.

  • 5 Reasons Apple Is A Bad Bet [View article]
I would love to hear from those who insisted just 30 days ago that Apple was a buy at $640 and that I should jump in. Please tell me why Mr Wu is wrong. Please no name calling or derogatory remarks. Please just respond to his points, and tell me why I should jump in now at $566 with both feet. And Thank you

ILLPA. The telling words in your comment are " I'm affraid (sic) that"....An old saying is " Scared money can't bet, and a jealous man can't leave home" You may want to consider some investments that allow you to sleep at night.

Deep V L you are absolutely right. I'm reminded of another tortured genius who nearly controlled an entire market for a time 80-100 years ago by the name of Henry Ford. There is truly nothing new under the sun.

If the associates with essential skills are the ones I've been dealing with at JCP for the last 15-20 years, I'm not real worried about losing them. JCP is the exemplification of a company trying to lurch past whatever was going on 20 years ago.

I like to go the horse races now and again, and over the years I've found that when a horse is an odds on favorite, it almost always wins......almost.

It's always sad to see the looks on the betters faces when the unthinkable happens, and the favorite loses. The comments are always the same as they tear up their tickets. " How could this have happened?"

Lots of money being bet on Apple these days.....Just saying

  • Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Gets Roasted [View article]
I am a long time Keurig owner, and I don't discount what GMCR has done to convert me and millions of others to single cup brewing. However..... I too think that the next three years will look quite different than the last three for GMCR and the industry.

    Consider:
The market is now huge, and not going unnoticed by the food industry. You can be sure that lots of innovative new products are being designed and tested right now all over the world. This is quite a different scenario than the weak attempt to market the inferior Tassimo product.

Brewer quality remains an issue for Keurig. Ask any retailer, and they will tell you that although sales for the units remains brisk, return of defective product is also high. It seems to be a basic design issue, and many people would love to have a more reliable unit. I believe they are vulnerable. (Ask the folks at RIM about customer loyalty for a $200-$500 product that people are very particular about, and that they use everyday)

It's all about innovation, and I don't see that GMCR or Starbucks have shown that the new ideas are being born in house. GMCR is committed to the current K-cup style, and Starbucks is just trying to not miss the boat.

Finally, questionable accounting. That issue is not going away.

GMCR is going to be a big player for a long time to come, but they will never see the same unchallenged growth they have enjoyed so far. I've been in and out of the stock over the past few years, and it has been profitable. I don't think I'm getting back in any time soon.

  • Green Mountain, Meet The Hammer Of Capitalism [View article]
I would tend to disagree with you about the brewers being stout. My personal experience, and conversations with people at the retail level would indicate that the return of defective Keurigs is extremely high. Because most people don't tend to have mountains of unused k-cups in their cupboard, it will be an easy switch to a more innovative product that offers access to a good variety of coffees choices when it appears.

The authors reference to RIMM is a good one. We're talking about products that people use everyday with a price-point of $150-$400, and they are passionate about the performance of the device. These folks are also very loyal.....right up until a better product is introduced.

If you really believe GMCR will soar again.....think again!

  • Green Mountain Coffee: Starbucks Bursts Its Bubble [View article]
There is one more consideration in this discussion I've not seen discussed. That is the notoriously flimsy nature of the Keurig brewer. Ask a clerk at your local retailer, and they will tell you that the return rate for defective GMCR coffee makers is extremely high..(I'm on my third replacement). I believe that coupled with the fact that the average person does not have a significant investment in K-cups on hand, when more dependable and innovative products become available with comparable coffee selection, the market shift could come very quickly and be quite dramatic. I believe that in the year 2013 and beyond, the landscape will look remarkably different.Just ask the folks at RIMM how quickly the market for a $250 product can disappear.
