And MMarrkk, you might do well to read up on subjects before spouting off. Atypical (above) is on target. And it's funny that you support a company's "right" to deny healthcare to employees while simultaneously decrying the possibility of the federal government getting into the business. So... what's your solution to healthcare? That should be an entertaining read.]]>

However, I hate to break it to Republicans, but the answer to all of this really is regulation. You call it "accountability" but have this quaint notion that such a system can come about solely by virtue of honor. History tells us this is naive. They do teach history to Keynesians, right?

How regulation became a dirty word I do not know, but if it is an evil it is a necessary one. Regulation, ie ensured accountability, throttles the excesses that cause disruption the system cannot tolerate. Necessary disruptions (such as technological advance) are special causes that must be managed as well, else they destroy the status quo a bit TOO fast.

Anyway, interesting article to be sure!

I have a better idea: blame the greedy bastards who created this big ugly Ponzi scheme along with the corrupt government regulators and lawmakers who allowed such a monster to flourish.

I don't think "the media" is overstating any of this. If anything, they've been mostly underreporting the dangers for years.]]>

Whisper: your solution is often touted by grandstanding politicians, which is enough to make me skeptical (only slightly tongue-in-cheek). Seriously, it sounds great in theory but won't work for the rank-and-file. Look at today's DOW drop-- stocks across the board were eviscerated. And that's just one bad day in a long steady decline. Plus, the average consumer really has no clue how to invest. Also, savings accounts are a joke-- paying about 3% if you're lucky compared to the real inflation rate of 10% or more (remember, the figures the government use for CPI leave out energy costs, housing, and conveniently, health care). Bottom line: no savings in savings. Just an illusion.

The real solution is to go back to a not-for-profit model across the board. Yes, there were inefficiencies, but they sure the heck beat the monstrosity we've allowed to grow over the past decades. Give me a church-owned-and-run hospital full of cranky old nuns over the nightmare that for-profit hospitals have become...]]>

So your counterargument turns out to be a straw man. If you were able to stick to the true problem, ie, the melt rate and collapsing glaciers, and then approach the subject objectively, you'd recognize the impending danger.

And sivere, you are falling for the same pseudoscientific propaganda as Thomas F. It is impossible for man not to at least *contribute* toward global warming given the changes we have wrought over the centuries, especially the last 3. When you replace natural mechanisms involved in the regulation of climate (such as massive forest tracts) with highways and urbanized areas on the massive scale that we do, you impact climate. To disregard our deep and wide impact is disingenuous... but I realize it makes many people feel more comfortable about their short-term thinking and net-wasteful lifestyles.]]>
