  • Is IBM Worthy Of A Position In A Portfolio Right Now? [View article]
No increase in assets just a increase in liabilities, therefore a decrease in equity. Take a look at LO. They have issued so much debt that their ROE has turned negative. Their equity has turned negative.

MO is another example of extreme debt to boost ROE.

High debt allows them use leverage to boost their returns.

IBM is just a less extreme example of using debt to boost ROE.

  • Is IBM Worthy Of A Position In A Portfolio Right Now? [View article]
Debt influences ROE percentage as a company has less equity with greater debt. Higher debt will result in higher ROE percentages as there is greater returns on less equity. Higher debt is not an issue if managed responsibly. Companies with reliable income streams should use debt to repurchase shares if said shares are undervalued and they can get favorable interest rates. IBM's buyback is a good buyback. As Buffett has explained, IBM shareholders should want the stock to stay low for many years as IBM can continue to buyback shares on the cheap.

  • Why I Like McDonald's Better Than Chipotle (And Yes, I Have Taste Buds) [View article]
MCD's overseas with its air conditioning and free bathrooms is actually high class dining. Ha, something to think about with all our first world problems.

MCD is not cheap enough for me yet though. The ceiling on the price I'd pay would be $84. That would be about 10x pretax net income.

  • 5 Myths About SeaDrill That Could Cost You Real Money [View article]
I think this is the first analysis on SA on SDRL that is based off facts. Numbers don't lie, this is a highly leveraged company facing a cyclical downturn along with Russia sanction issues. Will be interesting to see if Seadrill can survive the next few years. I personally like the super-majors here. Drillers are too capex intensive for me.

  • When The Dividend Cut Writing Is On The Wall [View article]
I wouldn't be surprised if SDRL went bankrupt in the next few years. SDRL investors seem to be out of touch with reality. SDRL is highly leveraged company in a capital intensive industry facing a cyclical downturn. Can SDRL survive years of famine, can SDRL get credit when it needs it? John Fredriksen has been quoted that he is his own creditor. He will structure the loans and bankruptcy in such a way that shareholders lose and he wins. Take a look at what is going on at SHLD to see a blueprint how management can rob the shareholders through loans.

PBI was not so highly leveraged and not in such a capital intensive industry. PBI had honest management as evidenced by their long term dividend history.

@getshorty Well I appreciate your insight on the Cisco sales channel. I too think Cisco is hurting.

I wouldn't get too worked up on the trolls that inhabit SA. I've come to realize that there are a lot of bored, no life retirees on SA that love to argue any point on the comment boards. Someday soon hopefully they'll uncheck for good.
