  • PFF: A Quick Way To Get Your Preferred Stock Exposure [View article]
Your thoughts are well placed - however being 35 year banker - soon to retire - the bank's initially got what they deserved until the government began to over litigate - the banks are being milked by either fighting in court and paying the the extraordinarily cost of litigation - or coming to terms with the Justice Department or a state's AG. Pick your poison - Mind you these settlement funds obtained by the DOJ do not flow into the general treasury - they remain in the control of the Justice Department - right along side other asset forfeiture awards via RICO like efforts. They then spend it as they see fit w/o much Congressional control. Too tempting not to gin up something again and again to garner headlines and add to the slush fund.
When Augustus was addressing the Roman Senate early in his Imperial career - "Conscript fathers - please remember it is better to shear the sheep - not flay the sheep!" With the current administration's time in office winding down - they really don't care if the bank's are getting flayed or not.

  • PFF: A Quick Way To Get Your Preferred Stock Exposure [View article]
I own a modest position in both PFF and PFXF and I plan to continue holding on to these positions for a long while - I wish both ETF included more cummulative preferreds within each of their baskets on assets. The European based financial companies are a bit of a concern - those banks have much different sets of regulatory rules than US institutions. In the US the too big to fail banks seem to pay out more in Justice Department legal settlements than dividend payments - hope that the litigation machine is winding down in the future so that these preferred stocks will not have as much governmental competition for the bank's cash distribution in the coming years.
Thanks for the article - a very nice article.

  • Durability Test: W.P. Carey [View article]
Bought some WPC a week ago and I intend to purchase more in the near future. With respect to their overseas properties is there a concern about currency risk and also the repatriation of overseas balances grown from operating income?

  • Here Is Why I'm Buying American Capital Mortgage Investment And Selling iShares 20+ Treasury Bond Fund [View article]
Thanks for this thoughtful article - I thoroughly enjoyed it and will keep an eye on this. Most of my large positions involve income EFTS, some which have a very nice increased due to the number of years I've owned it (example XLU = 315%) so I'll contemplate taking some of the "house" money to deploy on this strategy as well as some fresh cash. Again thanks for this article - I'm nearing retirement in 6 months and yes .... Winter is coming!

  • Why Everyone Is Wrong About Whole Foods Market (Again) [View article]
Thanks for the article and for most of the commentary. It's appreciated. I'm long WFM but will not be adding to my position. I do a bit of traveling and have visited numerous store locations. WFM reminds me a little bit of Starbucks - culture, store locations, pricing, management and such - nobody should get carried away with their emotions on anything to do with investing that said when I visit other grocery stores - the staffing and the clientele there are remarkably different than those that seem to be shopping at WFM.

All of the commentary have valid points - however over the long term the management's governance should have merited a mention within the article and comments. I don't have a problem with changing the same store sales time period to 56 weeks - there will be a new WFM located near my home in Irving TX and I anticipate a large number of steep discounts on products being exhibited during the first month. In fact the first three months of operations probably ought to be a subset category itself and not included within a baseline metric - pardon the pun but that to me is apples to apples ! I'll be keeping my WFM for a while and I hope the anticipated problems detailed within the article don't completely arise - if they do - perhaps the next article can contrast WFM with Starbucks or Coach similarities vs these companies competitors - I think you'll find the results of this research providing a balance to the concerns outlined within your analysis. Thanks again for the article of WFM - even if it seems to be overly pessimistic it's a valuable insight.

  • It's A Bond! It's A Stock! It's... Preferred Stock (Part 2) [View article]
What is your opinion on PFXF - which excludes financials? I've resisted owning PFF - I work for a financial institution and I think the large banks will continue to be a cash cow ( or more likely a sheep being sheared -- and perhaps a sheep being skinned), by various regulatory agencies This market vector instrument seems a decent way of holding preferred equities - coupled with CWB - convertible bonds is what I've been trying to accumulate - that and modest positions of AOM, IYLD, PCEF and FMUAX would provide adequate bond coverage within my portfolio - your thoughts would be most appreciated - thanks for a great article.

  • UPS Earnings Paint A Pretty Picture Of The Global Economy [View article]
Thank you - your analysis is a great comfort for having gone long on UPS earlier this year. I'll be hanging on to this for many more years too! Does the west coast labor situation have any ongoing impact on this company's financial results ? If so what are their action plans to mitigate this?

  • Replace Your Paycheck With Aristocrats - Dividends Twice A Month [View article]
I thoroughly enjoyed your article - thank you. A nice way to start 2015! I wonder if adding a covered call option to this proposed portfolio would add enough additional income to make it worthwhile. You've included a number of alternative equities - so if your cover call transacted the proceeds could be deployed towards purchasing the "runner up"? This kind of monthly paycheck coupled with a social security payment could boost a married couple's annual income into the high 80's.
