  • I Agree With Cramer, Don't Bottom Fish With Brixmor  [View article]
I own HCN, CCI, WPC all got slapped around today - well that's just what happens sometimes. Now's not the time to "go wobbly" on well managed companies.

Please don't be too harsh on the number of shares - I am nearing retirement and have been in the Wealth Private Banking side of this industry for nearly 38 years. Your comment reminded me of an 17 year ago experience I had in trying to refer a young woman who had inherited a 100 shares to one of the bank's stockbrokers - the broker asked me some background and cut me off when I indicated that this young lady had a concentrated position of a hundred shares .... I was cut off at that point by the broker who simply couldn't be bothered - he was too important - with such a chump change matter. So I located another (less experienced) broker who allowed me to explain that the 100 shares was Berkshire at the time was about $170k a share.

Sometimes it might be good to read the chapter describing the "widow's mite" in the Good Book.

Dear Brad and others - I have one more question on the 50% occupant rate within their towers - does some of their tenants keep out competitor telecoms within their leases - maintaining exclusive or limited additional carriers? I can imagine VZ or T paying a slight rate premium to CCI to keep other carriers from certain areas.

Brad - is it now too late to consider a purchase now with the current price?

I am looking at some tax loss selling and being very close to retirement your always outstanding research is consistently on my daily reading list. (recently sold some WFM and being inclined to trim some COP / AMLP - but think probably shouldn't and simply paying the 15% cap gains tax incurred when my Covidian shares were purchased by Medtronic. I am thinking of initiating a position for either CCI or DLR - or merely splitting the baby! I already own HCN and WPC and before I came across this article I was considering VTR or VNQ. I don't want too much healthcare concentration within the portfolio (owning ABT, ABBV, NVS too!). I am sitting on some cash and anticipate a near future pull back when the Fed finally raises rates - I know market timing shouldn't be contemplated.)

Your thoughts if DLR and CCI are still something to purchase before the end of the year. Many thanks - Thanksgiving is a great season and I am very thankful for your always outstanding articles too!

I've been a huge fan of WFM and have been an owner for 5 plus years. I am halfway convinced that holding the stock will prove a mistake - then again like Starbucks a stumble here or there.
Years ago during Desert Storm Bush 41 was having fits about scud missiles being fired into Israel - Margaret Thatcher was quoted to have said to the President - "Now's not the time to go wobbly George!" - so perhaps I ought not to go "wobbly" on this stock - the stores are clean - the staff highly helpful and the product is trustworthy - I shop there as often as I can - so perhaps I'll hang on to my 600 shares -
I do enjoy everyone's comments - keep them coming. This was a good article and I think it has talked me off the ledge!

  • PFF: A Quick Way To Get Your Preferred Stock Exposure  [View article]
Your thoughts are well placed - however being 35 year banker - soon to retire - the bank's initially got what they deserved until the government began to over litigate - the banks are being milked by either fighting in court and paying the the extraordinarily cost of litigation - or coming to terms with the Justice Department or a state's AG. Pick your poison - Mind you these settlement funds obtained by the DOJ do not flow into the general treasury - they remain in the control of the Justice Department - right along side other asset forfeiture awards via RICO like efforts. They then spend it as they see fit w/o much Congressional control. Too tempting not to gin up something again and again to garner headlines and add to the slush fund.
When Augustus was addressing the Roman Senate early in his Imperial career - "Conscript fathers - please remember it is better to shear the sheep - not flay the sheep!" With the current administration's time in office winding down - they really don't care if the bank's are getting flayed or not.

  • PFF: A Quick Way To Get Your Preferred Stock Exposure  [View article]
I own a modest position in both PFF and PFXF and I plan to continue holding on to these positions for a long while - I wish both ETF included more cummulative preferreds within each of their baskets on assets. The European based financial companies are a bit of a concern - those banks have much different sets of regulatory rules than US institutions. In the US the too big to fail banks seem to pay out more in Justice Department legal settlements than dividend payments - hope that the litigation machine is winding down in the future so that these preferred stocks will not have as much governmental competition for the bank's cash distribution in the coming years.
Thanks for the article - a very nice article.

Bought some WPC a week ago and I intend to purchase more in the near future. With respect to their overseas properties is there a concern about currency risk and also the repatriation of overseas balances grown from operating income?
