  • Are These Oil Dividends Safe?  [View article]
CVX can cut their dividend by 25% and still have a 4% yield even at current $80 share price. Would be surprised to see some consolidation in the oil/gas industry given the lower valuations. Long CVX and XOM

  • KISS Retirement Portfolio: Smooth Out Your Returns With Rick Ferri's 3-Fund Portfolio  [View article]
The annual capital gains taxes would be a big reason I would not invest in a mutual fund. I think of the stocks I buy much as one might think of buying rental properties. Good properties with high probability of stable or increasing value and increasing rents.

  • KISS Retirement Portfolio: Smooth Out Your Returns With Rick Ferri's 3-Fund Portfolio  [View article]
When I read one of these passive investing articles I have to stop myself and ask, "what is my objective for investing?". As a 68 year old business owner, I'm thinking about post retirement income. I will have social security and options premiums, but the bulk will come from the dividends I receive from stocks.
How does investing in "passive" investments compete with "dividend growth investing", both pre and post retirement?

  • My Fourth Quarter Portfolio Review  [View article]
Welcome back Bob and thanks for the report.
By what criteria do you establish fair value for a stock? Do you consider yield on cost in your decision to sell a stock?

  • Why I'm A Passive Investor (And You Should Be Too)  [View article]
"Bridgeway Blue Chip 35 Index (BRLIX) is a passively managed fund that buys and holds the largest 35 stocks by market cap and equal weights them. There's no manager deciding which stocks to buy and no manager trying to time the market. But, there's no index of such a group of stocks. Fund families like Bridgeway, Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA), Wisdom Tree, AQR, and others, provide a group of passively managed funds."
"A passive investor might have allocations to small stocks, small and large value stocks and REITs that don't mimic the allocation of the total market. Clearly that would be an "active" decision to not look like the market. However, if it's implemented using passively managed vehicles - the investor is being passive accepting the returns of the asset classes in which they invest."
I trust my ability to select stocks (Dividend Aristocrats, Morningstar Builder or Harvest stocks, and Schwab "A" rated stocks) rather than choosing from all of the options mentioned above. I try to buy stocks that I plan on keeping forever. I try to avoid a lot of risk. I don't compete with the S&P to see who wins each year. If I'm disappointed with my results then I know who to blame and decide what to do.

  • What Exactly Is So Objectionable About Obamacare?  [View article]
Our healthcare system is not dysfunctional, our government is. We need tort reform. The restriction on health insurance companies from operating across state lines should be abolished. When royalty from Saudi Arabia need major health care they come to the US. Some doctors in Ireland (gov't health system) are being forced to work 100 hours per week. This is another liberal wealth transfer program. Our demographics make this program a guaranteed failure.

  • Panera Bread: A Simple Strategy Shift To Double Shares  [View article]
"I believe this has occurred because management realized several years ago that franchisee-owned stores were outperforming company-owned stores and decided to improve the business simply by buying out franchisees."
I labored thru this article twice looking for the punch line. Do you really think turning over a well run business to someone producing poorer results is a way to " improve the business"? It's a "recipe" for medocrity. Panara is a niche with high brand loyalty. The have high name equity but very low product equity. Every item on the menu can be purchased elsewhere, usually fresher and at a lower price.

  • 6 Dividend Growth Stocks I Wish I Owned  [View article]
All of these have fairly high pe ratios and very low dividend yields. SHW has a share price of $164, a pe of 27, a div yld at 1.22% on the $2/share dividend and an ave div grth rate of 10.1% per year. This means if I bought the stock today and the dividend grew at 10.1% for 5 years, the yield on cost would still be less than 2%. Right?

  • The Young And Restless Update: This Aggressive Portfolio Is A Premium Performer  [View article]
No, you have obviously done some great research as the results show. Are you making all of your buy/sell decisions based solely on the fundamentals of each stock or are you screening a certain criteria?
As for AAPL, I have also recently sold my long term positions. Although the I Phone is still the leader the technolgy advantage has narrowed so that premium pricing is more difficult. I use AAPL strictly for trading options.
Thanks again for sharing your work.

"Selling Apple happened rather quickly, but I made the determination that the company has been facing product development issues, as well as margin erosion. The fact that they are sitting with $150 million in cash and not using the money to innovate right now told me that the company has become a value stock rather than a growth stock."

Apple has cash reserves of approximately $137 BILLION!

  • Why I Sold My Verizon Stock (And Why I'm Not Looking Back)  [View article]
Depends on why you own it. VZ yields 4.8% even with the high pe. VOD yielding 3.9% with a very low pe. My VZ shares are paying a very high yield on cost and as long as they can do that I'm holding. VOD is a better choice for purchase but that doesn't make VZ a bad choice to hold.......depending on why you own it.
