Stocks: Are They Worth All Of The Drama? [View article]
ArtuM, Thanks for the put spread examples with TLT though I was describing how I hedge my overall equity portfolio by holding TLT shares, writing ATM leap calls on them and buying OTM SPY puts for hedging beyond the TLT hedge (say beyond a 10% drop). I'm just trying to stay in the game and you're winning it!

Thank you Eric, that confirmation helps. I've kept TLT as a hedge, which hasn't been needed since last fall. You played that correctly. BAB is safer than BBN, but doesn't serve to hedge much. Hedging is the only reason I hold bonds at 30%. I got tired of wasting money on short duration protective puts.
ArtuM, thanks for pointing out ability to write options as those have helped to increase my return on those bond ETFs.

I hold bonds to hedge my equity portfolio, not because they have a good return. Rather than buying protective puts, I can buy TLT and get paid to hedge. As it goes down TLT will go up, all the time paying me to hedge. Also use BBN, TIP, IEF and VCIT. I guess if you always sell off your stocks you don't need a hedge. But I keep my dividend equities and sell calls. We will soon enter a cyclical bear market. It's no fun watching your dividend stocks and your portfolio drop 10% and more. I control that with bonds rather than puts (and they pay monthly).

Hahaha48, I have seen your comment so many times and no one ever responds so I guess I will. The author's owning the stock being commented on should be a red flag. It should be obvious that talking up a stock you own is self serving even if well intentioned. The cleanest advice is from an independent party. Proof: just listen to how we talk up our investments to ourselves as well as others. It may be comforting to read someones take on a stock you both own, but are they really your friend? Objectiveness is the challenge and the goal.
It is my understanding that stock buybacks add no increase in return for a long term shareholder. Buybacks are done en lieu of dividend increases, capital improvements (which grow the return), or acquisitions which pays retail for growth and only increases gross sales, rarely profit. The only one that benefits from buybacks are those that are going to sell the stock, not the long term investor. I believe most investors do not realize this.

Tax question. Can you hold BDCs in your IRA? If so, is there a limit to annual proceeds like an MLP? Some of you have held PSEC for years so I thought I would ask. Thanks.

Eric, thanks again for your insight. Could you overlay your investments onto the 12 year S&P chart above, including the price of gold? Might be interesting...
Todd, you really hit a nerve with this one. Remember who your audience is - dividend investors - not necessarily dividend growth investors. BTW, I think your article was not only correct, but evidently needed - hence the reprisals...

thanks for the article. Have you gotten out of BBN and TLT? Would you be in favor of IEF or VCSH now?
Thanks in advance for your guidance.
