there are different types of smarts...my engineering college roommate doesn't have a commercial antennae...he can't invest any money in anything. But he can design airplanes and rocket ships.
This situation is quite typical of many engineers. I've met heaps from Boeing just like that.
my undergrad roommate who is assigned to the fuel system of 787 did apply for an engineering position once upon a time to one of at Space X. He decided to stick to Boeing coz they were funding his PhD. He indeed wanted to work for Mr Musk based on his reputation as an entrepreneur and a physicist. But decided he wouldn't risk his marriage and take a pay cut to "save the world" or go for a "moonshot". Boring Boeing was just fine for his situation.
Thanx John & Zelaza. I'm just your typical white collar middle management type...trying to make a buck only. I didn't realise one simple question wasted so many electrons. I'll pay attention to developments of "capacitor technologies"
collateral damage...GM suspends Volt Production...this doesn't directly have anything to do with tesla...but high tide raises all ships...I wish tesla luck.

The Japan Debt Disaster And China's (Non)Rebalancing [View article]
its not entirely appropriate to compare japan vs china...japan by the 1990s was a developed economy. China...well...some people are still starving while the elites are as modern as anybody else.
I think the Model X may have bought more time for Tesla to develop their technology. I don't think its too fast or too soon.
When the Roaster was still in development Elon Musk stated their goal was to have the first model in the 100K price range. 50K for the 2nd model and 30K for the 3rd model. These are clearly the base model pricing as the typical is much higher with options and Tesla's disclosures show that most customers are forking out for the options moving the average prices quite a bit higher.
The Model X is delaying their really mass market model vehicle out a few more years. I hear an updated Roadster will come after the Model X...all buying more time to build brand and hopefully technology momentum if a new break thru is around the corner.
I still think hybrids are the way to go for the mass market...i'm not convinced on the energy density of lithium batteries and its technology trajectory is fast enough in the near term. I fear Tesla will remain a niche player in the top 1%.
Apple was able to get out of the 1% because their premium products while pricey was still within the grasp of the average person. I can afford a few 100 for a laptop.

advertising in the 50-100 years long run has proven to work as a business model very well. see radio, see television, see print and other advertising. Of course lousy companies still go bankrupt but as a business I suspect google has a much better chance to be around 50-100 years from now...but apple...may not.

Musk has in the past sold out his stakes in the companies he worked for while their sale prices remain attractive...i wonder if he'll do the same with his EV company?
