  • A 15.8% rise in the M2 money supply in May and aggregate financing of over 1T yuan shows there is plenty of liquidity in China, state-controlled Xinhua news agency says in a commentary piece. Last week's credit crunch in the banking sector was therefore due to widespread speculative trading and shadow financing. The article confirms suspicions that the central bank, which let short-term lending rates hit record highs before intervening to ease the problem, wanted to send a warning as it looks to slow down the credit boom. [View news story]

  • U.K. carriers Orange and T-Mobile have begun taking orders for the BlackBerry Q5 (BBRY +0.1%): each is offering the phone for free with a 2-year, £26/month ($41/month) plan. Meanwhile, retailer Unlocked-mobiles is selling the phone contract-free for a steep £350 ($550), and says it will ship on July 15. To a large extent, the mid-range Q5 was created with emerging markets in mind. (May announcement) (Wells Fargo[View news story]
As a BBRY bull, I think they should lower the price from $550 to $300 to attract the folks in the emerging markets which is critical if BBRY still wants to make money off BBM Channel, etc.

  • Fresh info about the rumored "R-series" mid-range QWERTY BlackBerry (BBRY +1.2%) phone is provided by Chinese site DGtle (translation). The phone will reportedly be called the R10, and sport a 3.1" display, 5MP camera, 1800mAh battery, and 8GB of internal storage. The display size is on par with the high-end Q10's, but the other specs are inferior. Engadget points out next week's BlackBerry Live (May 14-16) conference "is a prime opportunity for an unveiling." [View news story]
As a huge BBRY fan, I know the R10 is supposed to be cheap but it's really ugly IMHO.
