  • Recently, the market learned that youth unemployment in Italy hit 40% in April to go along with a 36-year record high of 12% overall unemployment. Never fear though, Italy's trade union CGIL is out with its estimate of when the Italian economy will recover pre-crisis (un)employment levels: 2076, a mere 63 years from now. • Nokia (NOK -0.7%) insists it's "in full compliance" with Indian tax laws, and will fight a $383M tax bill levied by local authorities. Vodafone can sympathize. The tax bill arrives as the NYT's Nick Wingfield reports India is one of 7 markets (per IDC) where Windows Phone (MSFT) shipments outpaced iPhone (AAPL) shipments in Q4. The others: Russia, Argentina, Poland, South Africa, Ukraine, and a group of small Southern/Eastern European countries. Indian iPhone sales have begun to grow, but off a very small base. [View news story]

  • Will The Next Week Answer Correction Question? [View article]
I am following you since your writing on summer crash of 2011. this time i am observing that you are slightly bullish than neutral or bearish. I mean to say that in your previous writings you were certain that correction is coming for sure at least your writings were suggesting that.
Anyways i may be wrong in observation.
what is your breakout level for SPY?

  • India is one market where Nokia (NOK) hasn't lost its market share lead: research firm CMR estimates the struggling Finnish phone giant accounted for 22.2% of Indian mobile phone shipments in 1H12, putting it easily ahead of #2 Samsung (13% share) and #3 Micromax (5.5%). A big reason why: smartphones are estimated to have made up just 5% of shipments in the cost-sensitive market, and to have actually posted a slower growth rate (12.2%) than feature phones (16.9%). • Apple (AAPL) may have sold out of its initial stock of iPhone 5s just an hour after the company began accepting pre-orders for the smartphone on its Web site today. The order page initially said delivery would be on the device's launch date of next Friday, but then it said that the handset would be available to ship in two weeks. [View news story]

  • Apple (AAPL) has added 4 more Samsung (SSNLF.PK) products, including the hit Galaxy S III and the Note 10.1 tablet, to a U.S. patent suit that's separate from the one that delivered a favorable jury verdict last week. The suit, which is related to 4 software patents and now involves 21 devices, is also being filed on Apple's home turf, via the U.S. District Court of Northern California. The S III and Note 10.1 arrived too late to be among the devices Apple could request bans for in response to its jury win. [View news story]
i am thinking now that, if apple stretches this too far, there will be a diplomatic row btw USA and SK, because like apple is icon for USA , Samsung is iconic to SK.

  • "Come on. This is farce," says tech legal site Groklaw, incredulous Apple-Samsung jurors took only 21 hours to deliberate over a 700-question form one lawyer says would take him 3 days to understand. Groklaw is also unimpressed with contradictory statements from jurors, several verdict inconsistencies, and the fact jurors reached a decision without reading a 109-page instruction form (.pdf). Some lawyers are predicting this case will reach the Supreme Court, due to the issues it raises about UI and design patents. (more[View news story]
yes i know Indian pharmaceuticals were using expired patents to make generic medicines , but i red somewhere , even that comes a threat to US pharma industry and USA forced India to sign a treaty which keep all pharma inustry under the radar of US patent law. US can't force china to abide by US patent law why?
you mean, if all those patients should lie near mortuary , or pay US prices for all those generic medicines in India. what a level playing field.
more importantly this whole issue is regarding software patents. There are lot of flaws in software patent grating.

beware, don't blame whole continent. eat your own words back. i can also say that , there are also rampant patent abuses in western countries. I can also say that, this whole flawed(purpose fully kept it like that) patent system is made to "UNFAIRLY" protect western companies.
But like you westerners, i will not blame the whole country or continent for one persons deed.

  • Did Microsoft Hint At Acquiring Nokia? [View article]
if MS buy NOK, then how will they get money from APPL, as APPL have cross licensing deal with MS? I read somewhere that MS and NOK are sharing patent revenues.
I think, they already bought NOK, but can not put it on the papers, simply because of international laws. If you carefully look at today's NOK, the remains are what MS can integrate into there business.
Location and Commerce is now NOK. Phone business is their smallest unit.

  • General Motors (GM -1.1%) plans to close a plant in Germany that produces cars for its Opel unit after 2016, but will agree to keep on workers until then despite the soft demand in Europe. Due to a restrictive labor deal, Opel has to dance around layoffs and closures while it continues to negotiate with labor unions.  [View news story]
i really wonder how unions in Germany are so strong? recently Nokia had so many layoffs around the world, but they did not dare lay off workers in Germany.
two years back ,they closed factory in Bochum and they paid 100,000 for each employee

  • Apple (AAPL) is proving to be as good at avoiding taxes (here and internationally) as it is at designing smartphones, taking advantage of tax laws designed for the industrial, not the digital economy.  The company had an overall tax rate of less than 10% in 2011, vs. about a 24% average for non-tech companies, reports the NYT, seemingly laying out a blueprint for politicians to shift attacks from big oil to big tech. Ugh.  [View news story]
not being sarcastic, how much tax apple was paying when making loss 15 years back, with same share price?
