  • Microsoft Earnings Preview: More Fully Valued Today, But Satya Wasting No Time [View article]
No one can accuse Satya of not taking action. Layoffs, changing the contingent staff structure, consolidating conferences. Microsoft is a vastly different place now than it was 7 months ago. And we are getting employees back from Amazon at roughly the same rate as we are losing them (anecdotal).

  • Could Microsoft Steal Mobile OS Market Share From Apple And Google Via Cloud? [View article]
Had to check that I wasn't violating my NDA! The next version of Visual Studio will support Multi Device Development. What does this mean? That it will be super easy to write an app that will support iPhone, Android and Windows Phone. Good things are coming!

  • Microsoft falls; Street worried Mulally won't be named CEO [View news story]
At least the stock is dipping just before end of the year ESPP purchase. I grind my teeth when this happens just after instead of just before.

  • Microsoft axes criticized employee ranking system [View news story]
I don't think the stack ranking system is needed to trim non-talent. It is really up to the manager what to do with employees. I've known people with consecutive 5's that are still employed in their group and I've known people that were let go after one 5.

Anyway, this will get the engineers happier.

Either the price will go up, or the stock will end up yielding 6%. Either one works for me!

  • NYT: Nokia worked on Android phones, Microsoft knew [View news story]
"Meanwhile, a Singapore-based startup called Newkia has already recruited a team of former Nokia execs, and promises to poach additional Nokia phone division employees in an effort to build Android hardware true to the spirit of Nokia's design/engineering philosophy. "

Somebody is gonna get suuuu-uued! I wish them excellent luck not treading on any of the patents aquired by Microsoft in the deal.

  • Misek hikes Apple price target [View news story]
Since this guy is apparently a clown of the year candidate, let me ask you how does one construct a reliable price target? Is it industry PE * Earnings? Is there an article or book that describes the process?

  • Why Apple Is Undervalued By As Much As 50% [View article]
Johneewhy- I heard a newcaster say that Tim Cook may be Apple's Steve Ballmer... it was a deadly insult and is likely true.

  • Steve Ballmer (MSFT +0.3%) has been working with only "a small group" of direct reports and board members on his restructuring plan, Kara Swisher reports. That naturally has many senior execs left out of the process on edge. Many expect Ballmer to start revealing his plans internally by month's end. One source: "It feels like it is going to be titanic — that Steve is doing this change for his legacy ... And it’s the first time in a long time that it feels like that there will be some major shifts, including some departures." [View news story]
A major reorg would be... interesting. I get pinged about every 2 weeks by Amazon and other companies for employment opportunities, so I'm sure other engineers are as well. Better keep the employees happy, otherwise folks may vote with their feet.

  • Microsoft (MSFT) does an about-face, dropping the Xbox One's Internet verification requirements and all of its used game restrictions. GameStop (GME) investors are very pleased, shares +7.8% AH. Microsoft's change-of-heart follows a major backlash from gamers (they were far from appeased by Redmond's initial response), and plenty of gamer enthusiasm being shown for the PlayStation 4 (SNE), both due to its lack of similar restrictions and its lower price. [View news story]
Next stop for the XBOne: allow developers to self-publish their games to have a more rich ecosystem. However, this isn't a big concern to shareholders and won't really manifest itself that much in who does or doesn't buy Xbox One vs. Playstation 4.
The Xbox One goal is to get in the living room, controlling the Media and use that leverage for further products/data gathering.

  • Microsoft (MSFT) won't charge a fee for Xbox One used game sales to "retailers, publishers, or consumers," the company states in a blog post. GameStop (GME) investors are relieved, shares +5% AH. Other details: 1) With games/data stored in the cloud, users will be able to access owned games on friends' consoles by logging in. 2) Users are required to be online once every 24 hours on their home console, and once an hour on a friend's console, to verify usage rights. 3) Games can be shared with up to 10 family members, who can play them on any console (though only one can play from a shared library at a given time). • Microsoft Takes A Mulligan, No One Notices Or Cares [View article]
There aren't any more "do or die" Operating System launches. The lesson has been learned- ship faster, do less between releases, be more responsive to customer feedback.
My wife has an Android tablet and pretty quickly "stole" my Surface because she likes it that much more.
