Good simple spreadsheet. Definitely a good tool to assist those planning for retirement.

Could you share how one would change the headers to conduct "what if" analysis

  • A High-Yield, Low-Price Stock That's Traded In A Tight Range For 5 Years Is Great For My Immediate Income Stream [View article]
    Hi Alan,
When I read this article on FTR, I decided use FTR to conduct an analysis with my son, John. This is our first collective stock analysis. What transpired over the next hour was enlightening. John was given the assignment to look into Verizon, ATT and FCC. I looked into management, credit quality and financials.

Points that we discussed to lead to a decision
    - Former CEO was moved to senior level board position. An internal candidate was selected to the CEO position. Only one senior executive had operation and acquisition experience.
    - Credit rating from Moody is Ba3 - speculative and stable.
    - Consolidating the Verizon acquisition went over budget in cost and time. Outside firm was brought in to provide tactical implementation
    - ATT much smaller acquisition is expected to reduce combined employee count between 700-900 ( in CT )
    - Organic growth is trending down thus the strategy to grow by acquisition.
    - Government funds to FRT - while helpful may cover up to 60%-70% of the project costs. FRT will have to provide remaining resources.
    - While dividend rate is appetizing, trend has been down and flat.

Decision - FTR, while providing a nice dividend, appears to be in the long term, a business to no where. FTR may be viewed as a stop gap for customers located in high cost area. Over time, more cost effective means to service customers will be brought online. FTR may no be able to participate in the transition process. At some point company may be sold.

if you would digest the objective of the portfolio, then you would understand the rationale of RS. One of many things I like about RS, is his thought process. Especially when I did not think of it first :).

    Scott,

Excellent result of your three part analysis. Your projections were very much in line with actual results.

AGNC's financial modeling and/or executive decision making was the difference in actual results.

  • The Skewed Nature Of Dividend Growth Rates [View article]
    Hi Roady,
I generated a spreadsheet similar to yours. When viewing the spreadsheet I can see dividend growth per stock and portfolio; yield on cost per stock and portfolio; income % of each investment relative to portfolio income. Special dividends are included in total and have a separate title for calculation purposes.

Eli, Excellent article. I agree with David's comment. I will add, you have succeeded with the purpose of the article. Some readers have been educated; some will challenge and some will share their experience.
