Citing Wang
Xudong, head of the Ministry of Information Industry,
Xinhua reported that China will decide on its first 3G licenses for
mobile phones this year.

Wang was quoted as telling a national work
conference today that the decision on the development of the country's
third generation mobile communication system will be made at "the
proper time this year".

China currently has four major telecom
operators, China Mobile and China Unicom, which provide mobile
services, and China Telecom and China Netcom, which are engaged in
the fixed-line business. All are interested in gaining a 3G license.

No decision has been made on which technology will be used.
