China overseas investment surges

According to the WSJ (subscription required), direct investment overseas by Chinese companies rose 27% in 2004 from the prior year to $3.6 billion. Many of the investments were focused on acquiring scarce energy and mineral resources. Contracted investment overseas, an
indicator of future spending plans, soared 77.8% from the prior year to
$3.7 billion in 2004.
