Retail: Facebook ‘Fan’ Winners and Losers – November 2010

by: Retail Geeks

Retailers are proactively reaching out to their customers and target audience via social media, ranging from Facebook and Twitter pages to blogs and online communities. It is fast becoming the most effective approach to boost brand awareness, understand their customers, get feedback, as well as direct traffic to a company’s web site.

We like to track the Facebook activities and monthly fan base growth for the retailers and brands that we follow (and a few others). Click here to see our compilation of monthly Facebook ‘fan’ numbers.

This month, we’ve expanded the list of companies and brands that we’re tracking. We’ll provide a more comprehensive analysis next month once we have month-over-month data for more retailers/brands.

It is worth noting that out of the 70 retail chains/brands covered in this survey, Ruby Tuesday (RT – $13.28) and Lowe’s (LOW – $24.86) were the largest percentage gainer of ‘fans’ in November 2010 versus October 2010 with impressive gains of +189.9% and +150.4%, respectively.

Conversely, Urban Outfitters Europe (URBN – $38.26) and P.F. Chang’s (PFCB – $51.24) delivered dismal November 2010 ‘fan’ growth of +3.9% and +4.3%, respectively.

Starbucks (SBUX – $32.72) continues to lead the way by a wide margin with the largest number of ‘fans’ with 18.6 million (the chain even added an impressive gain of 2.2 million new ‘fans’ in November 2010 versus October 2010).

Finally, take a look at Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY – $45.95). The chain has an embarrassing number of Facebook fans (only 4,600) for such a large, well-known brand. Who’s running the marketing program at BBBY… Ted Kaczynski (aka, Unabomber)? Does the company have something against utilizing an essentially free advertising medium?
